We had the good fortune of connecting with Chickabass and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Chickabass, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
Risk is interesting because it’s almost needed to achieve those seemingly “unattainable” goals. Shoot- I’d even say it’s needed for anything in life. I’ve taken countless risks to be where I’m at today; not continuing school, using all my savings to move to LA, leaving a comfortable job. It’s important to take risks because just like in video games, when you’ve run into challenges you know you’re leveling up.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I love so many different genres and when I write music I try my best to incorporate the things I love from each. I’m most excited this year to start releasing more music and creating with other artists and producers. The biggest thing I’ve done to get to where I’m at today- as cheesy as it sounds- was not giving up. You have to consistently bet on yourself even when the odds aren’t in your favor.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I like to go to Laurel Tavern when I want a nice little place to eat and drink. I also like this dive bar called Fox Fire, it’s great for people watching. Last year I was shown this place called ‘Tea at Shiloh’ by one of the artists I work with. From the moment I stepped in I was in love. It’s a late night tea house that is so calming and inspiring. They also have daylight hours for work/study or just to enjoy their delicious and unique tea. Last time I went they had a tea that tasted like Hot Chocolate, it was incredible.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My parents are definitely my number one supporters. They used to let the first band I was ever in- a heavy metal band keep in mind- come and practice at their house multiple times a week. Double bass drum, distorted guitars and screaming was all they heard for hours and they didn’t complain once. I’ve also had so many incredible mentors/teachers- Hiram Hernandez, Kris Crummet, Ricky Orozco- just to name a few.
