We had the good fortune of connecting with Chris Phillips and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Chris, every day, we about how much execution matters, but we think ideas matter as well. How did you come up with the idea for your business?
I saw a need to for athletes and active adults to get more out of their training and rehab that better prepared them to return to things they wanted to do. The services I saw were too basic and generalized. In professional sports, we have to prepare an athlete to go back to play at a high level, not just have an injury heal. Not only does the affected body part need to be able to meet the demands placed on it, but also the rest of the body when the person returns to their sport or activity. I felt this was not being addressed in most situations which led to poor results.

What should our readers know about your business?
Compete Sports Performance and Rehab has three locations. Our first and flagship location is in Lake Forest. We also have loations within the Anaheim Ducks rink in Yorba Linda and Westminster. Our services include sports performance training, sports injury rehab and recovery services provided by Athletic Trainers and Strength Coaches. If you don’t know what an Athletic Trainer is, they are certified healthcare professionals in the field of sports medicine. Many have masters degrees and are educated in evaluating, managing and treating sports related injuries. This is a big key for us as we specialize in working with athletes and active adults to get them to the level they need in order to compete in their sport. This may include a professional hockey player returning to play after an injury, fine tuning aches and pain with a figure skater preparing for the Olympics or helping a healthy athlete get better so they can play in college. The key is knowing the demands the athlete will endure in their sport and preparing them to meet those demands.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Growing up back East, this is an easy one. There are so many great places in Orange County. I’m lucky enough to live where most people vacation. My two favorite towns are Dana Point and Laguna Beach. The Strands and Salt Creek beaches are my favorite with great views, walking areas and access to the ocean. Young’s Beach Shack just opened in Salt Creek beach. It’s a cool little place to grab lunch or a drink overlooking the ocean. The rooftop lounge is another great place to grab a drink located in downtown Laguna.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
There are so many reasons for our success. Early in my career, I worked under two different clinic owners, Joel Rosenstein and Jim Ronai. Joel had been with the New York Cosmos and Jim has gone on to work with USA Baseball in the Olympics, both set the bar extremely high for me. They taught me to treat everyone one the same and to always look at what’s going on with the whole body and not just the injured part. Joel and Jim helped set the stage, but our staff both past and present is what makes us successful. My goal was to bring the service that I provided to professional athletes to the public. I can’t do that by myself, trust me I’ve tried. So having a staff with the same vision and passion is what makes Compete so great. So many other facilities are built on cool machines and stuff you see on social media to entice clients. At Compete, it’s the staff that makes us special, their knowledge, experience and compassion leads to our clients success. Lastly, our clients have led us to success. Their hard work and perserverence to recover from an injury or train to get to the next level requires a ton of effort. Their success breeds our success and I’m proud that Compete plays a role.
