We had the good fortune of connecting with Chris Sangster and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Chris, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I always new I wanted to work for myself and be a freelance producer and mixer. When my job as an assistant ended in 2015 I was at a crossroads, I could either look for another job similar to the one I had or I could go all in and try to make it as a freelancer by starting my own business. I knew I had a strong enough support system in place to take the risk of going out on my own so thats what I did. I started Sangster Sounds in 2016 and haven’t looked back since.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Pursuing a career in the music business, especially in Los Angeles, has been the most challenging and rewarding experience of my life. This crazy industry has taught me so much about myself and what I am capable of. All of my creative work comes from a place of service. My philosophy on making music is to serve the artist and the song above all else. I don’t try to impart a particular style or direction upon anyone that I work with. I let the music and the artist lead the way. Whatever we need to do to make the music the best it can possibly be, that’s what we do. I got in to this business because I love music and I try to let that lead the way at all times. More personally, I do release music as a solo artist. My debut album ‘Find A Way’ came out earlier this year and it is all about my journey of moving to Los Angeles from Virginia to pursue a career in music.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
For me, LA is the center of the world and the possibilities of what to do and experience are truly endless. You can have a backyard cookout one night and go to an amazing restaurant the following night. Bestia and Sushi By Scratch are two of my personal favorites. Take in a concert and the Greek or the Troubadour. Go see the LA Phil or LA Opera. Hike in the Santa Monica Mountains or relax on the beach in Malibu. Get out in the desert and experience Joshua Tree. Go see live sports – Dodgers, Rams, Lakers and Sparks are my teams. See world famous art at LACMA or the Broad. There is something here for everyone and that is what I love about LA.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My parents and my partner, Sydney. Without their unwavering support none of what I do would be possible. I’ve learned a lot from many people over the years but the core support of close friends and family is what keeps me going.
