We had the good fortune of connecting with Christie Shinn and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Christie, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
Sometimes the fear is what makes you fail over and over again. When you feel like it’s something you HAVE to do – you just need to do it. Then it ends up paying off for me in a big way. You’ll know when to push your own boundaries to standing fast.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Being an artist I wouldn’t say is easy or hard. I don’t want to build up some sort of weird block or expectations about it. However, it is a very enriching experience, but not in the way you think. You have to learn to have a thick skin, yet be able to trust yourself indiscriminately and faithfully. I know it has definitely been a journey – some places I’ve learned to bend and not break – yet hone my craft but kick out all the naysayers.
Demon Bitch and my general brand is that I laughingly talk about pain for the most part. Sometimes I do feel like I don’t laughingly talk about pain and that’s okay. Here I make fun of what pisses me off and that should make you laugh too as it makes you feel the same way.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Normally, I’d hang out in the San Gabriel Valley. I love taking people to places that have little restaurants or places to explore on a whim. Sometimes, I see something cool and want to take a person to it. Also, walking with people is nice too sometimes. It really depends on my mode and how I feel. It doesn’t mean I’m easygoing but I really listen to the mood in between me and the person. I normally wouldn’t do mainstream LA. It’s fun for a second, but I find it too populated at times. I like taking people to weird places and cool little things I find that they also happen to be interested in.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
For my friends that have stood by me, and a shoutout to CAPS – a bunch of talented professionals and colleagues in the comic arts that I am happy to lead and represent.
