We had the good fortune of connecting with Christopher Hostetler and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Christopher, how did you come up with the idea for your business?
Do Not Die Young re-launched in January after reimagining our roll at the beginning of the pandemic. After seeing how quickly the pandemic took such a devastating toll on my brothers and sisters in recovery, I knew that as a collective, we could make a difference in the lives of those in sobriety. By adding meditation and mental health coaching along with a strength and conditioning coach, we wanted to serve the recovery community in ways that no one else was.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
The business name is literally drawn from the fact that I had a near death experience at the age of 5, surviving a gunshot to the spine that left me permanently disabled. It is also drawn from my favorite quote: The idea is to die young as late as possible by Ashley Montagu. I started Do Not Die Young back in 2014 – where has the time gone? Starting off just health coaching, we have grown into a “full” service health and wellness destination for people across the United States and abroad. Now, we are the only business that offers a full menu of lifestyle services specially informed/designed for those in the recovery community. From meditation to nutrition to mental health to fitness, we have a brilliant and caring team in place that sets us apart. But you do not have to be in recovery to work with us.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I love Los Angeles and all it has to offer. Covid has obviously changed the world and limited (even put out of business) some of my favorite activities. You will find my family camping throughout the year. The beauty of living in LA is that we are mere hours away from the ocean, mountains and desert, and we take advantage of all of them! During normal times you will find me training muay Thai at The Yard, drinking coffee and working on coaching programs at Cafe Tropical, taking advantage of the beautiful Griffith and Elysian Parks, shopping at the Silver Lake and Echo Park farmer’s markets, and catching a movie at the Vista theatre.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I’d like to give a shoutout to everyone in recovery right now and during the last year. I’m not sure if there’s ever been a harder time in history to stay or get sober, you are doing great wherever you are in your journey. Know that we are here for you.
