We had the good fortune of connecting with Christopher Lin and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Christopher, is there something you believe many others might not?
In creative industries, we often hear the word “passion” used in conventional pieces of advice. “Follow your passion” or “Find your passion” has often led to empty bank accounts and failed businesses. Many times, these photographers were passionate about the results and the glamorous aspects of the job. Whether it was the compliments they received on social media for an impressive image or the rush they felt when they were interacting with clients and having their creativity appreciated. What they probably weren’t passionate about were the not-so-fun aspects of operating a successful business, such as the marketing, the accounting, the legal work. They probably weren’t passionate about continuous training, trying (and failing at) new techniques, and learning new skills. The ones who continually experiment and push themselves are the ones who seem to have longevity in many creative industries. So I would revise the phrase of “follow your passion” to this: be passionate about the process, not the results and you are more likely to achieve success.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Lin and Jirsa Photography is a boutique wedding photography studio in Orange County, CA. We are one of the few wedding photography studios in the world who have successfully scaled to over 20 photographers while maintaining a luxury brand. This is through selective recruitment, intensive training to standardize our style, and a strong company culture. Building this company was not easy, with work weeks exceeding 60 hours for the first 5 years of business. The weekdays were filled with marketing, sales, post production, album design, and everything else that goes into running a business. And the weekends were packed with long photo shoots, sometimes exceeding 15 hours a day. We overcame the challenges through specializing, with each partner handling a specific set of business procedures and goals. Along the way, we’ve learned in the power of teamwork, team culture, and being a positive influence and role model for your peers and employees.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
The best time in Orange county starts and ends at the beach. There’s nothing like experiencing the culture, bars and restaurants around Laguna Beach, Newport Beach, or Huntington Beach. We would rent bikes and cruise around the city, stopping randomly to grab a bite to eat or to lounge around on the sand. A portable speaker is a must, as is a picnic blanket. The fewer plans, appointments, and obligations you have the day, the better.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My business partners, Pye Jirsa and Justin Lin, have been sources of inspiration and guidance throughout my personal and professional life.
