We had the good fortune of connecting with Clare Cunningham and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Clare, what do you want your legacy to be?
My biggest goal in life is to be remembered as a person who touched/saved many lives with my music. Through my own pain and personal struggles I want people to remember that no matter how hard life got I found a way to survive and still inspired others to do the same 🙂 A relentless hardworking artist who never gave up and helped spread love not hate!
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My primary school (elementary school in the USA) back in Ireland were the first ones to discover I could sing and it all started there really. I sang at school concerts, church and family gatherings. I took up the keyboard at 6, got my first piano not long after and then self taught on guitar at 16. It was at this age I penned my first song and had it recorded. However I had been writing poetry since I was a child so I guess I had a flare for writing early on. I guess what sets me apart from others is the fact I was one of few who left home and everything that felt safe to me and comfortable to go and persue a dream that may/may not be sustainable. For this I am so proud of myself because I actually moved 5 times within the span of my education and career path and never gave up hope or lost sight of my dreams. I am proud I also never let the critics squash my dreams or push me into getting a ‘real’ job. So no, it certainly wasn’t easy by any means – I was a pretty brave young lady looking back now! I just knew that there was nothing else for me and this path was calling me and so it helped me through the tough times. My gut feeling has always felt right here. Lessons I’ve learned along the way – to NEVER give up and don’t listen to somebody else’s opinion if its not a constructive or positive one. People who put others down only do so because they themselves are not happy and they subconsciously want you to be on their level of un-happiness. I want the world to know that Clare Cunningham is unstoppable and until the day I leave this earth in physical form I will continue doing what I am called to do – to inspire and heal people and show others that they too can do whatever they put their minds to. Only YOU can stop YOU doing what YOU want to do!!
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I currently reside in Nashville! There is so much to do and see here! Everyone needs to go visit RCA studio’s on music row which is my home from home and where I predominely record. Legends such as Elvis and Dolly have all graced their talent here! Grand Ole Opry, The Ryman, Bluebird Cafe are some well known spots. Broadway is of course a must for any tourist looking to honky Tonk. Fitness enthusiasts would love all the amazing parks on offer including Centennial park which has a life size replica of the Parthathon. Lots of great eating places and as a plant based eater I love Sunflower Cafe, Southern V, and Avo. Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I wouldn’t be where I am today without my parents. They supported me from day one and said to follow my dream and if I was happy then they were happy. Even when my high school called them in before I graduated to say I was wasting my brain and making a big mistake choosing music as a career they stood by me and for this I owe them everything. It may also sound cliche but I recently found my faith again and I have to thank GOD for bringing me back and showing me that I am on this path to do what he has set out for me.
