We had the good fortune of connecting with Coletta Dykes and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Coletta, how has your work-life balance changed over time?
I have always been in control of my balance. I try only to control the things I can and cannot get mad over the things I can not control. You must have balance in order to go through life. Without good there is no bad and without bad there is no good. Balance is an essential part of life. Sometimes meeting a new friend, coworker, or family member is your balance, you just have to know when your lacking it.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am a Professional Hairstylist and fitness instructor. I’m most excited about running a business to help women look and feel good about themselves in hair and fitness. I want my business to be so big I’ll be able to afford a shop, which I am working on my own Braid Shop. My fitness class is huge (speaking into existence) ! It’s for women to have fun in my cardio dance class for 30 minutes followed by resistance training.
It definitely was not easy. However I believe it is obtainable. From working a 9-5 having that reassurance that you’re getting a check every 2 weeks is easy. Once you’re in business for yourself you can lose money, or not make any in those two weeks and it freaks you out! Trust me. It’s important to save and think about your future. How can I make a living with what I want to do , how can I work hard but still live life, save money, buy a house, own a building etc. Those are the questions you have to ask yourself are you willing to go hard for you?!
I’ve learned that it’s hard working for yourself because you are the only one who sees your vision and where you want to be. It’s not easy but it’s worth it still.
I absolutely love my businesses and it is the best of both worlds! Hair and Fitness business two ways to make you Beautiful!
I want the world to know even when your back is against the wall you got this. If it’s your business just know I worked hard for it and you’ll see it.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I live in Los Angeles county and it’s so many things to do. To say I’d say we have to check out Dulan’s Soul food because it’s so bomb! Sevilla in downtown Long Beach because the Paella is filled with delicious seasoning and spices you’ll fall in love. The humming bird trail in LA is amazing they have a swing that you can over look the city mountains it’s a beautiful view. The naked beach in San Diego is a sight to see because my bestie is free spirited with no judgment. Well also do Yoga on the Bluff it’s a cool way to meet friends, be wild and free and enjoy our practice.
Whew to see exciting people you can go anywhere, the world is full of unique people and styles.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I definitely want to shoutout my Husband Jermaine Dykes. Honestly without his love and support I would not have the confidence to run my own business. I’ve tried so many things as an artist and he’s been here along the way buying me everything to start my business whether it was nails he was buying me the kit, or wanting to sing he was willing to pay for my singing lessons, bless his heart because I can not sing worth a damn lol or hair he was being my support telling me I can do and I’m good at it.
