We had the good fortune of connecting with Corbin Booker and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Corbin, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
My thought process was around me wanting to find a way to create an impact for the community I was living in. Initially I was struggling in between jobs trying to figure out what would fuel me to want to do more. Fitness and sports have always been apart of my life; I played sports in HS and college and those life lessons helped me find my passion. I was also concerned about maintaining the level of focus I had for physical fitness now that I didn’t have practice or games to look forward to. The new framework was understanding that competition is everywhere, I had to be an athlete with a different mindset.

CBFIT is a performance based fitness company, but that just means we want you to perform better. My mantra is that everyone is an athlete if you’ve ever competed against something or someone. Competition is foundational to growth and development, so we challenge everyone to be better than they were the day before with new movements, progressive training, and systems designed with every athlete in mind.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I’m most proud of the communities I’ve helped to develop. I think being a coach for someone is one of the best positions in life, regardless of what you’re coaching. There is always an opportunity to point out or remain focused on the ultimate goal.

It wasn’t easy to get here professionally, I definitely took some missteps in the process and I’m constantly learning how to be a better and more effective instructor & coach. I I’ve overcome challenges by looking for guidance and help from my network and reflecting on how to continue to elevate someone’s fitness experience with every session or class.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If we’re in Brooklyn (I just moved to DC, not sure of my way around here enough to tell anyone anything). Brooklyn Zoo has a pretty cool indoor parkour playground, and there are plenty of gardens and open spaces to walk and get fresh air. The Botanical Gardens are dope ways to get out and get active while also enjoying nature.

I’d also say you gotta go to Empanada Mama, John Brown BBQ, Grey Dog, and Bonchon, as well as Sugarfish. After that, probably catch a basketball game either at Barclays or one of the summer runs up at Dyckman.

I always tell folks to hit Fort Greene Park or McCarren depending on what your preference is. Fort Greene has the steps but McCarren has the track! It’s nice to have that flexibility in Brooklyn.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I can’t think of just one, but I would definitely say my HS and college strength coaches were a start (Coach Sistrunk & Coach P have kept me solid). After that, I credit the people I started my certification process with in New York and who encouraged me to start advertising my local Harlem bootcamps. I think it’s pretty special when I can convince most of my community to come out and do at least one workout, and for a lot of folks that was a springboard for their fitness journey. So I credit my people for giving me the opportunity to push further and further.
