We had the good fortune of connecting with Crewsheff and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Crewsheff, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking.
“You never gone make it if you never roll the dice!” – Dom Kennedy
Risk taking has been paramount.
If I never decided to leave my biomechanics class that day and prioritize my passion for music, my career in music would nonexistent.
Had I not made the decision to share my music with the public, I would never have met my first artist.
If I stayed in Dayton, OH & never left my hometown to work with artists thousands of miles away, there would be creative relationships I would never have developed.
These relationships increased my clientele, introduced me to producers who helped expand my skillset, and I learned how to communicate better with artists & engineers in studio. Very thankful for this level of personal development I’ve experienced so far!
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My earliest memory of music involves me sitting in the backseat of my mother’s Corsica.
We were listening to the radio and this disco beat comes on, four on the floor drums pumping through the speakers. Suddenly, the smooth disco joint that was playing repeats a one bar chop four times before the hardest snare transitions the disco sample into one of the dopest rap beats I have ever heard.
BOOM — in barrels MC Lyte, with a boisterous voice rapping the song Poor Georgie.
From there, my sense of soul was born, and I feel like that truly sets me apart from my peers. I would listen to albums in their entirety searching for that feeling, that next moment. Reading liner notes to see who was producing albums, going in the dictionary to figure out what an interpolation was — music became a journey of understanding.
Having the courage to share my music with others & my patience to understand the artists I create with have brought me so many places a timid mind would never have taken me.
I learned that I could create the feeling I searched for within others, simply by giving my all during the phase of creation, and then actually pressing play so people could feel me.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
For the past three years, I’ve stayed directly adjacent to the strip, but I do my VERY BEST to stay away from it!
You would definitely catch us at my favorite taco spot the moment they get off of the plane – Tacos & Beer. Quick three pack, two sides & some Jamaicas just to catch up.
The next day, we’re hitting the LVAC for a work out & then going digging for vinyls at Zia Records on Rainbow. Its definitely a place where old collectibles go to be reborn & given new life — I LOVE IT there. Wrap the night up by hitting a pop up for some good smoke, and then one of my favorite food trucks in the city — Hibachi Time.
At some point, I gotta hit the studio with my homies Quixk & Tax for a cookup session. Mandatory practice in the dojo.
Definitely gotta hit Red Rock Basin for a good hike & morning smoke. Could also hit Lake Mead to get some fresh air & a good view. Follow that up with Jus Bar & a walk through Fashion Show Mall or Caesar’s.
I’d end the week in my favorite spot — The Arts District — Velveteen Rabbit, Esther’s Kitchen, Chocolate City Cigar Bar — you name a good way to wine down — they’ve got it!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to dedicate my shoutout to my brother Tripp Fontane! Before he was one of the host’s of Tonight’s Conversation, he was a friend/recording artist that knocked on my door and asked me if I wanted to learn how to make beats. An inquiry that changed my life forever!
