We had the good fortune of connecting with Cristina Cano and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Cristina, what role has risk played in your life or career?
The experiences in my life that have brought me the most joy and success, all took a level of risk that each time felt both terrifying and exhilarating. I would say that in general, I am a person that seeks out new adventures and welcomes risk. Of course, stepping out of my comfort zone can be terrifying, but with practice I have learned that without fail, I am met on the other side with nothing but rewarding experiences that harvest growth…and some great stories.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I’ve been a musician and performer for as long as I can remember, and professionally for about 15 years. I’ve had the great privilege of performing all over the world, and learning about the business from a variety of vantage points. When I’m not writing or on stage, I also work behind the scenes helping build the careers of other artists from the marketing, PR, and distribution side. When I take a step back and look at the people I’ve met and the things I’ve accomplished since proclaiming this my passion and life worth pursuing, I am so proud of the work I’ve done and the experiences I’ve been able to have, and am always excited for the expansion I know is ahead of me artistically.

Some of the biggest lessons I have had to learn were the most obvious ones: Take big risks and trust my gut, make the music I want to make not what I think others want to hear, and surround myself with other open-minded and talented creatives. Once I learned that fulfillment comes from living my life authentically, it became a lot easier to take larger risks.

Right now I am releasing my second album as Siren and the Sea (entitled ‘For Bathing’ releasing May 7th) which I am very proud of because it is self-produced, thematically cohesive, and a labor of love. I spent the last 2 years writing and developing this record and (in my opinion) think it sounds amazing. Getting to hear my work and the sounds of my fellow collaborators on vinyl is such an honor, and I can’t wait for the rest of the world to hear this piece of music, and (hopefully) feel inspired to bathe to it!

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Lately I’ve really been leaning in very hard on what I always thought was the quintessential California experience: rollerskating from Santa Monica to Venice and back, sunsets on the beach, and long winding drives down the PCH. Obviously I’m a beach bum so when my friends come to visit, we are getting Bay Cities subs and cheebin at the beach for some quality swims and sunshine.

Other top food faves: KyoChon for wings, Escala for cocktails and empanadas, and La Fonda Antioquena for my Colombian comfort food fix.

Also…one of my favorite things to do in LA is to walk. When I moved here, I was told that no one walks in this city, but I’ve had some pretty epic urban hikes walking all around LA, and I can say with certainty that its the best way to get to know how wonderful and diverse the neighborhoods are!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I’d like to make a huge “we made it through 2020” confetti and champagne toast to my incredibly charming and handsome real life partner who definitely exists and inspires me to take huge leaps every single day, and who is down to clown all over town.

Also to my boss and friend Kaytee Long of DIY Public Relations, Inc., who gave me my first big break in this city, and who has been one of my biggest cheerleaders since day one.
