We had the good fortune of connecting with Dahlia and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Dahlia, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?

I think the most important factor behind my success so far is remembering to stay true to who I am. Once I stopped limiting myself and started creating content that felt more true to my interests and style, that’s when I saw my community begin to grow. I love vintage fashion from the 1920s through the 1960s, so my platform has a little bit of everything, but my favorite decade for style is the 1940s. I also don’t put pressure on myself to participate in social media trends; other people are great at that but I get stressed trying to keep up with it all and it doesn’t always feel natural. I prefer planning content in the form of tips or tutorials that can be helpful or inspiring for people.

Another important factor to remember is that I feel more creative and inspired when I focus on my own goals rather than the success of others. As a content creator, it’s too easy to start comparing myself to others and how much more successful, creative or talented I think they are. No matter how much my platform grows, I still have to remind myself that people return to it because of what makes it unique.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I’m a vintage style and beauty content creator. My content is mostly inspired by Old Hollywood elegance and femme fatales of film noir. I share style inspiration, hair and makeup tutorials and more ways to add a little vintage glam to everyday life on my blog and social media channels.

I started my blog to be my creative outlet outside of my day job and to connect with other vintage lovers. The next step was learning how to make my passion for vintage-inspired style and beauty more lucrative. I spend a lot of time researching how to do that, and have finally reached the point where my work as a content creator helps me financially. One important thing I’ve learned about being a content creator is that your income fluctuates from month to month, so you need to be really good at budgeting, especially if you plan for it to be your only source of income eventually. I’ve also struggled with managing my time. Since I enjoy what I do, and I want to make the most of my time by working on content, it’s hard for me to “clock out” and put the phone or computer down at night. I’ve had to learn how to be better about that to avoid burnout.

Ultimately, I do what I do because I love it. I enjoy connecting with others who share the same interests. I want my platform to be a happy, positive and entertaining space for people to visit when they want inspiration or just an escape from life for a few minutes. I also enjoy supporting small businesses on my platform by sharing products I like that I know my audience would be interested in as well.

I want to encourage people to experiment with different fashion and beauty styles as a form of self expression. I often mix high end items with thrift store pieces to show that you don’t need to spend a lot to look great. It’s really about wearing what makes you feel confident. Vintage is fun and vintage style is for everyone.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?

I’d like to thank the vintage-loving community on social media. In my experience, it’s been a very welcoming, inclusive and positive space. I’m extremely grateful for that, given how terrible social media can be. I’ve been able to connect with so many kind people through comments and messages, even meeting some in person.

I have a supportive group of friends who are content creators as well and are always cheering me on; it’s nice to know there are other people who understand the work it takes and know we can share our experiences and ideas with each other.

I also want to give a shoutout to my sister who I frequently bother to help me pick the best photos to post. Also, my husband, for constantly embarrassing me by showing my Instagram profile to anyone he meets and being incredibly supportive.
