We had the good fortune of connecting with Dajana Mitchell and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Dajana, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
If someone would have asked me 3 years ago, if I could see myself owning a skincare line one day, I probably would have laughed about the question. My professional background has nothing to do with the beauty industry. I’ve been working in the entertainment industry for the past two decades. But as a single mother of a teenage son, the 10-12 hours days at work were a struggle. I started to think about an alternative way to make an income, but skincare didn’t come to my mind at first. It happened organically. I’ve always been very interested in natural beauty products, so when I tried several organic facial oils, not one of them blew me away. I looked at their ingredients and thought: I should try this myself! I started to research the benefits of oils, bought many different organic oils and made my own blends. My skin loved it, I loved it and when my friends tried it, they loved it. One of my closest friend suggested I should start selling the facial oil. She’s an esthetician and also told me about a plant based retinol alternative, which I used for the second facial oil I created. After I saw such a positive change in my skin from using the two oils, I decided to take the leap and start my own skincare line. LIEBE Skincare was born (Liebe is the German word for love). Since the beauty industry is new to me and I’m investing my own money, I slowly started with designing the labels, finding the right bottles etc. When the pandemic started, the entertainment industry shut down and I was able to devote all my time to Liebe Skincare. I built the online shop and launched it in May 2020. Now I’m excited to see my baby grow here in the US and to launch the line next year in Europe.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
The beauty industry is a fast growing industry and there are many beauty products to choose from and a lot of competition. Though this didn’t stop or intimidated me when I started my business, because I believe in my products. I use the facial oils myself every day for over a year now and my skin looks and feels great. I’m getting compliments for my skin. I’m very careful which products I use for my skin, since I suffered from eczemas during my childhood. I myself, only use natural and organic beauty products. When I couldn’t find a good facial oil, I made my own. I shared it with friends and the positive feedback was overwhelming. I knew the oils work for my skin, but to hear that they also changed my friends’ skin was amazing. That’s how LIEBE Skincare started. I had no clue about the beauty industry and had to research and learn a lot. Many times I thought “What are you doing? You can’t start a skincare line”. Those thoughts still creep into my mind once in a while, but then I try to look at all the things I have achieved in my life and how far I have come from living in a small town in Germany to living in Malibu, raising my son on my own, I recently won an Emmy for my work as an editor and now I started a skincare line. So stop doubting yourself! That’s how I motivate myself. It’s not always easy, because right now, I’m wearing a lot of hats, which can be overwhelming. Having the financial needs to hire talented people would be a big help in getting my business to the next level and I can’t wait for this to happen. My goal with LIEBE is to share the love and gifts that mother nature gave us. The facial oils are all natural and organic. They are anti-aging and hydrating. The “Golden Glow’ is an anti aging facial oil with a plant based retinol. No harsh side effects like actual retinol, but the same amazing results of younger looking skin. I have two dermatologists in Germany interested in endorsing my products in Europe. They reached out to me after they tried the oils. This is very rewarding and keeps me motivated. I’m very excited to share my facial oils with the world and hopefully contribute to make many women and men happy. Liebe means Love in German and I want women (and men) to look in the mirror and love themselves and their skin.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Okay, should my best friend Ines visit me from Germany, she would want to spend a lot of time by the ocean. How convenient, that I live in Malibu. We would definitely dine at Nobu and the Little Beach House Malibu. We would do a yoga class at the Little Beach House outside on the deck, overlooking the ocean. After we’d head over to Sunlife to get some healthy shakes. The Malibu Farm Cafe at the pier is definitely another place we have to visit. I love their fresh farm to table food. We would also have to do some wine tasting at one of the local wineries, Malibu Wines or the Strange Family tasting room at the Malibu Lumberyard. I think a must for every tourist is Venice Beach. We’d take a stroll at the boardwalk and stop at the Waterfront for lunch and some cool music. From there we head over to Abbot Kinney Avenue, maybe for dinner at Gjelinas. A cute place to visit is Deity Dogs and Goods in Beverly Hills. The store’s owners Ellen and Lindsey also run a non profit dog rescue where I adopted my dog from. They sell lots of cute stuff in their store, for example beautiful high quality jewelry, handmade by Ellen. Since I love spending time in nature, I would definitely take Ines on one or more hikes. We have so many great trails in LA, but I would probably take her to Griffith Park to show her the Observatory and the view of DTLA. Another hike would be Solstice Canyon in Malibu, one of my local hikes. Oh and I’d take her to eat the best, most original Italian pizza in town: L’ Antica Pizzeria Da Michele in Hollywood. I love their romantic patio, the vibe and of course their Neapolitan pizza. It’s always worth the drive from Malibu.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I’m considering myself very lucky. I grew up with a very strong role model: My mom. She owned a small business and I witnessed her working hard every day. I’ve been thinking about her strength and perseverance a lot, especially when I have a moment where I doubt myself and my decision to start my own business. Yes those self-doubts creep in once in a while. I also have a huge support group of friends: Jodi, Melissa, Julia, Sarah, Jessica and Lauren. They’ve been supportive from the beginning, not only by testing and buying my facial oils, but also by encouraging me, when I need it. They are all beautiful souls and strong women I look up to and feel inspired by. Another big supporter is my son Jaden. He’s the main reason I started my business, but he’s also cheering me on and lets me know regularly how proud he is of me. As a single mother with a new business and a career in the entertainment industry, it can get stressful and without my regular meditation routine, I probably wouldn’t have the energy I need and walk through life happy with a positive attitude. Whenever I need an extra dose of spiritual healing, I visit my favorite meditation studio Malibu Meditation Journey. Alejandra is an amazing healer and teacher and I’m grateful for her gift, which helps me stay balanced.
