We had the good fortune of connecting with Dalia Patron and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Dalia, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
I will be the first to admit, most of my life I wasn’t much of a risk-taker. I followed the rules and did everything “by the book.” 5 years ago, I finally took it by heart that a change in my life had to happen and quickly. My safe job (then) it’s all I knew but I was chained to it. I had not ever traveled, I worked holidays and I felt I was no longer growing. All the unhappiness trickled into so many aspects of my life. So one day, I put my 2-week notice on that decade long career and dove in headfirst to a field I knew nothing about. Taking this risk changed my life completely! Was it easy? No way! I cried for like 2 months over frustration and instability but I had something better, my freedom. Very soon my online business started taking off and in no time I was working from my computer while traveling the world and living in different countries. My only regret, it’s not doing it sooner. I can’t promise you it won’t be hard but it will be worth it!
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I would like to start off by encouraging anyone who has an idea and that little voice in the head telling you to start something new. Whether it’s a business or something creative, just do it! If I could do it again, I would start that side hustle, on the side while still keeping my day job until that side biz is more stable. I guess I did it backwards but the lessons I learned are priceless. Before working for myself I didn’t think it was possible for me because I made false judgements about myself, like I can’t because I don’t have a lot of money, or because I am a woman, or because I am not smart enough and the list goes on. I learned to unlearn all the things society taught me about who entrepreneurs are or people working for themselves. Know that the entrepreneurial road has many layers and flavors and sometimes things will work out and most of the time they won’t. I have learned to let go if it’s no longer serving a purpose. Starting over and over it’s the name of the game until you find the winner!
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I just moved to San Diego so I am still exploring. I live close to the beach which is my sanctuary. So naturally, it will be the beach! Start the day with my signature green smoothie but if it’s the weekend maybe brunch with a view. We would go to the beach get some sun and drink some rosé. I love beach games so probably play beach rackets. I really cherish spending time in nature, a good conversation and good drinks. It’s nothing crazy but I have learned the value of the simple things with good people. When I started making changes in my life/career life weeded out the “friends” that didn’t fit my growth. So I’ve noticed the people I surround myself with are people who are driven, smart, and want to live a good quality life as I do. So I imagine this day with a person like that. Maybe this person would have a book and we can spend quiet moments reading next to each other as well, however (readers) not a requirement! We would finish off the day with a great dinner probably italian or sushi and watch a movie at home. I am thinking covid-life type plans. The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to dedicate this to my first and most important mentor, Marcin Teodoru. He saw the entrepreneurial spark in me before I knew it myself. I never imagined in my wildest dreams this life was available and possible for me. He encouraged me and patiently mentored me in my beginnings as an entrepreneur. I am so grateful for everything I have learned from him and most importantly for not only being my partner in business but also in life. Thank you, you’re the best mentor I could’ve asked for.
