We had the good fortune of connecting with Dalton Taylor and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Dalton, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
To me, taking risks means always saying yes to opportunities that come my way. There have been moments in my career where I have been asked to work on projects that require techniques for which I am unfamiliar. Despite this lack of experience, I always jump at these requests as a means to challenge myself and learn. There have certainly been moments where I have failed in successful execution; however, the majority of the time I have been surprised by the outcome. Additionally, this mentality has opened doors for me that would not have been accessible should I have refrained from taking these risks.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I think what sets my work apart from others is my background in traditional and fine arts. From an early age, I had been interested in drawing. I attended a magnet arts middle school and high-school where I majored in visual arts. This foundation of traditional art from an early age greatly impacts my work in animation today. Though I have traded in a paint brush for a computer mouse, the principles remain the same. Moreover, I continue to use drawing as a way to get my ideas out and communicate them quickly with others.
I still have professional goals, but I got to where I am today through perseverance. I have been knocked down many times. I have had good experiences and bad, but I have learned to take other’s opinions with a grain of salt, to keep pushing, and to keep making art.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If my best friend were to visit LA, I would take them to El Matador beach in Malibu. It is a beautiful retreat from the concrete city. I would conclude the day getting delicious Pupusas at Grand Central Market in downtown.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would not be where I am today without my parent’s support. Most parents cringe at the thought of their child going into the arts professionally. Of course there is generally fear of the stereotyped “starving artist” who is unable to support himself. However, my parents have always offered unconditional support and have encouraged me to pursue my passion for the arts. I am extremely grateful for this.
