We had the good fortune of connecting with Dan Miller and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Dan, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I’ve always been a little bit of a rebel and don’t like following the rules. When I was working for other people I found myself hitting goals (sales or performance) with a much smaller time invested than most of my peers. I’m a path of least resistance thinker and believe that most of us work far too many hours and do far less work in those hours than we are capable. So I started working for myself to free up more of my time and stop making other people rich off of my efforts.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
For most of my twenties and thirties I worked two full time jobs and over 70 hours/week. Always chasing money. When I was in my mid thirties I decided to go back to school and get my MBA, while still working two full time jobs! One Master’s degree led to another and then another and, in the very near future, a PhD is in the works.

The higher education helped me navigate in the business world but the real credit goes to the books I read while I fly. I’m on an average of 4 flights per week, domestically and internationally. I use that time to read and study (80-100 books per year). I want to set myself apart from others in the wellness/public speaking space by being very well educated in the things I teach.

But before all of that, I taught martial arts from a very young age. As an assistant instructor in my teens, to having a small school of my own and then teaching group courses throughout my 30’s and 40’s.

I look back and think it was easy to get here, but maybe I didn’t think that while it was happening.

My secret to being successful today is that I say YES to everything that comes my way. I put the mission of helping other people get healthy in the front of everything I do! I no longer chase money, rather I chase opportunity to help those with their hand out asking for help. The money follows….every, single, time!

I grew up lower middle class (at best) in North Dakota. We weren’t rich…at all! But the discipline learned in martial arts helped me understand that, with enough practice and coaching, I can do anything I want to do.

Today I stand on stages around the world and educate people on how to live better, happier, healthier, longer lives. And I do it using evolutionary cues AND modern medicine and scientific studies. Recently I was in front of 750,000 live audience members in India! That all has happened in less than a decade because of my “mission first” attitude AND because I say YES to things before I’m every ready to do them. That forces me to grow into my business.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My journey started back when I joined a martial arts program at 12 years old. So I suppose Grand Master Moo Yong Yun should get a bunch of credit! He taught me that if one person can do it, anyone can. We just need to figure out how.

And the book What to Say When You Talk to Yourself by Dr. Shad Helmstetter absolutely changed my life and showed me that our thoughts change our behavior more than anything else can.

And Mark MacDonald from Venice Nutrition (and now Food Freedom on Brinx.tv)! He has been my biggest mentor and supporter for over 12 years. He’s the reason I do what I do today.

And watching my parents die early from lifestyle diseases was a big driver to do what I do today. Dad dies at 56 and mom at 74. Both from preventable diseases associated with their lifestyles.
