We had the good fortune of connecting with Daniel from UNRIVALED INVESTING and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Daniel, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
Most people don’t achieve their financial goals. Passive investors that prefer indexes, might underperform inflation or generate limited returns for years. For example, most US stock investors in the 1970’s lost purchasing power as inflation raged higher!

Many active managers perform even worse with higher fees! This leaves financial “advisors” that don’t actually know how to research companies, but are expert salesman that can peddle high commission products.

This challenging landscape leaves everyday, Mom & Pop savers with few appealing options to deal with the core question of getting ahead: how can I prudently invest today?

I launched Unrivaled Investing in 2020 to help provide an unbiased, no-hype perspective to savers around the world. I post regularly on YouTube to teach investors how to size up individual companies as well as discuss the broader market trends. There’s also an exclusive group at www.unrivaledinvesting.com where I share real-time updates of my diversified growth & value portfolio as well as detailed company analysis on businesses I’m considering investing in. We also have a lively community that both asks and answers questions on our exclusive Discord server.

My goal is that by sharing my own journey I can potentially help investors around the world achieve their own goals!

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I’ve been blessed to have seen the investment world through the eyes of many different parties. When I was at UCLA I interned for a private equity company, where the founder (and now friend), Matt Kraus, mentored me on the opportunities and challenges of running small businesses while using debt.

After college, I started off as an investment banker and learned how businesses market themselves to raise capital and how too much debt can cripple both poor and great companies alike. I subsequently worked at a multi-billion dollar hedge fund that would later inspire me to launch Unrivaled Investing. Afterall, professional investment guidance shouldn’t be saved just for large institutions. Everyday Mom & Pop savers should have access to expert investment insights for a reasonable price.

Since my time working at the hedge fund, I’ve had the opportunity to work as a CFO at a start-up that quickly grew to $40 million in annualized sales. This was a tremendous learning experience to see how a company operates from the inside. During this period, I helped oversee various aspects of running a business from payroll to collections, budgeting to capital raising. It was a steep learning curve and as Warren Buffett once said, “I am a better investor because I am a businessman, and a better businessman because I am an investor.”

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I love the outdoors and seeing new things! Fortunately, there’s no shortage of adventures in Southern California. There’s everything from seasonal waterfalls (Millard is my favorite) to secretive beach caves (Leo Carrillo is my favorite beach adventure). If you like spending time outdoors, there’s something for everyone here!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
There are many books that have shaped my journey. In particular, Roger Lowenstein’s publication on Warren Buffett, ignited my passion for investing when I read it in High School (“Buffett: The Making of an American Capitalist”).

While this helped show me WHERE I wanted to go, John Wooden’s little blue book played an enormous role in HOW I wanted to get there. HOW I wanted to live my life. (“Wooden: A Lifetime of Observations and Reflections On and Off the Court”).

While I wouldn’t be where I am today without these and many other wonderful books, I’m truly indebted to my family who nourishes and sustains my soul.
