We had the good fortune of connecting with Daniel J. Reece and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi DANIEL J., what is the most important factor behind your success?
My Mother. She raised me and my older brother on her own so I truthfully really do want to MAKE IT back up to her. That couldn’t have been easy and I know she made sacrifices on my behalf.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Well I would just say that my approach to music is More so of me telling my story as well as having people be able to relate to it because I think that a lot of us go through the same type of stuff in a different way. Also to enjoy the destination, I mean the journey not the destination lol. I honestly have just been freestyling for fun since I was like 9 years old with my boy Chazz who’s in New York and my older brother EJ, and then over time a few artists really just inspired me to actually want to do it myself and record it. A Tribe Called quest, Biggie Smalls, Gang Star of course Tupac, Snoop, Kendrick Lamar aka K-Dot, Lil Wayne, Tyga, Wiz Khalifa, Mac Miller r.i.p my brother. Justin Timberlake, Usher, Chris Brown and NSYNC etc, and everything from Motown including the Temptations to of course Jackson 5 and Michael Jackson! Of course it’s been hard because sometimes you just feel very lonely on this career path since it’s not ya know your standard traditional systemic lifestyle role modeled path. I really started getting good because I would just be alone sometimes with my headphones tapped in, and would just write all day or in my free time to instrumentals. That’s also how I was blessed with a Full Ride Scholarship to Arizona State University from my writing portion on those big state national test. Been in LA for 2 and a half years now. Shout-out to Santa Monica and Venice Beach btw.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I mean where do I start it’s Los Angeles, California. I can talk about this forever, but honestly it is mostly just going to the beach and eating some good pizza LOL or a cheeseburger. A cold brew and some good weed. Oh, and wings of course, and all the authentic Mexican street food. All the food trucks, and to end of with a night on the town either in DTLA, Hollywood, Santa Monica, or my Favorite Venice. Special shout-out to all the beautiful ladies out here too. C’mon now can’t forget about them.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
To Gina Renee Brown. My Mom from St.Louis! I want to give a shout-out to my Dear Heavenly Father, the author, poet and architect of the universe. Only by the grace of God I’m still alive because of the personal trials and tribulations I’ve been struggling with the last few years. Moving out to L.A on your own following your heart, passion and dreams of acting isn’t necessarily the easiest thing to do. But I do have great friends, family, and mentors that I know who are rooting for me and are always there for support!
