Meet Daniela Blanco | Artist & Performer at Casa Boho

We had the good fortune of connecting with Daniela Blanco and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Daniela, what habits do you feel helped you succeed?
I feel that constantly going into Introspection and Retrospection of my art journey is a habit that has kept me centered, grounded, and grateful which is what I use as fuel to keep going on my path. Calmly riding the waves of inspiration and energy bursts through mental, physical, and spiritual practices help me stay balanced, concentrated, and allow me to go within rather than to look outside for validation or worthiness. It’s very easy to get distracted with the outside world, especially with social media, one has to keep focusing on their craft, their ideas, and visions. Creating from within rather than just copying or remaking something that’s already out in the world is very important for me.
Being introspective helps me remind myself why I do what I do and how I want to keep going. If I look back in retrospect, I can see how much I’ve grown and how I’ve already reached my own paradigm of success. This by itself keeps me feeling grateful, humble, and inspired in my own journey. Going inwards and changing my perspective from chasing something to already having achieved it, the energy goes from Lack to Abundance, from creating art because its pressing to creating art because it’s enjoyable, enlightening, and insightful.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My art is inspired by my surroundings and the places I travel to. By using surreal imagery and impressionistic colors, I create whimsical landscapes and mind-scapes that tell a story and uplift the viewer’s mood and perception. Little by little I am also bringing forth more imagery inspired by my Bolivian culture. All my paintings are one-of-a-kind, even if I tried to recreate them, I wouldn’t be able to. This is because I create from a place in my present moment where I flow with the medium, the images and what is moving me at the moment. I say “moving me” because music is a big inspiration and element in my art. I create playlists specifically for the pieces, sometimes there is a song or two that I keep replaying that helps me channel through the vision and feel onto the canvas. These songs can be played while observing the piece and it becomes an interactive piece of art, almost like an installation.
I also use glow-in-the-dark paint and blacklight paint so the piece changes as different types of light shine on it.
I like the concept of art changing, not only with the help of lights and mediums, but by the viewer’s perception developing as they notice little details or clues in the painting that give the painting a different meaning.
I make art that helps the viewer feel good by using color theory and uplifting imagery because this is how I also support myself through thought processes and emotional states. I got to where I am today by believing in myself and as corny as that sounds, when the outside world isn’t showing you how you feel inside or what you want to see manifested, or even gives you any incentives like someone buying your art, for example , the only person that can keep you on track is yourself. The outside world will always take a little bit longer to manifest and reflect what you are energetically calling in, consciously or unconsciously. This is why I am excited to keep going and see my vision unravel.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I believe La Jolla is one of the most beautiful places in the country, I miss Miami very much but living in La Jolla and having a beach so close to me for surfing has definitely inspired many of my paintings. A morning walk or surf session on the beach and hike up to PinPoint Cafe at Scripps would have to be a must. Then walk down to Caroline’s for brunch with a view of the surfers by the pier. This is where I love to practice yoga and barre with my community. One of the things I love the most about San Diego is the health and fitness focus that people have here so a workout at Pure Barre, where I am a part time instructor, would be on the list. Visiting downtown La Jolla and seeing the marine life and cliffs would be on the list for sure along with visiting the Contemporary Museum of Art and lunch at Duke’s with the best view. Throughout the week I would choose lunch in downtown San Diego’s Little Italy or Liberty Station and its many restaurants. I also love farmer’s markets like the one in Ocean Beach on Wednesdays or Downtown La Jolla on Sundays. Sunsets at Windansea or La Jolla Shores surfing are my favorite and even more by having a drink afterwards in the Marine Room where, if the tide is high enough, the waves crash against the restaurants’ windows. Night time fun can be spent in Pacific Beach or Revel Revel in downtown at one of the many unique parties that the San Diego/Burner community offers.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I don’t think I’d be where I am now without the support and encouragement of my husband Matt and my family. I am also grateful for Kalee Choiniere and her friendship and art, she’s an inspiration. Alice from Shady Lane Gift Store who has supported me and my resin art for a few years now. I want to thank the support of my community in San Diego for inviting me to do Live Art at their events and for encouraging my work by collecting my art pieces. Last but not least, I want to thank the Sound Cabin Art Car for providing me with the space and place to create the murals on it so my art can be experienced at Burning Man and other festivals.
