We had the good fortune of connecting with Danny Fain and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Danny, what is the most important factor behind your success?
My ability to diligently hyper focus along with being detail oriented has helped me in mastering post production. Editing in both film and photography requires such a perspective, as the littlest change can make a huge difference. I consider film editing as solving a complex puzzle. You have to piece together the footage you’re given into a full narrative, as well as decide how certain cuts or visuals best support the narrative.

Since the majority of my photography is in collaboration with other artists, in particular dancers, I consider the main goal of my photography is to capture their talent the best I can. With dancers, they’re very specific about positioning and angles, so I welcome their own input in the shooting process as well. When I edit, I smooth out any blemishes and stray hairs I find, while still making sure I authentically represent the model. This process led me to create connections with the SoCal dance community, and I have been given many opportunities from them.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
As a person on the Autism Spectrum it is sometimes challenging for me in social situations. That’s why I’ve always been in love with storytelling, as it’s a universal way to share and build connection with others, and for me a way to escape the isolation I sometimes feel. Through my many collaborations, I have learned to be more attuned socially and how to better share my artistic vision. The films I have made and/or written are based on my personal experiences, and my photography is a way to explore the artistic aesthetic of athletics and dance. My personal brand is a unique artistry in creating visuals with an eye for detail and storytelling that makes for beautiful photographs and engaging films.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
In giving someone a tour of the Orange County area, the best place to start would be the main circle in Old Town Orange. It’s a charming area with great food options as well as vintage stores and antique shops. There are specific spots in Santa Ana that come to mind too; The Bowers Museum, the Santa Ana Zoo, and the indie theatre The Frida. Laguna Beach is always a fun spot, especially the beach and art museum. However, my top spot to take someone would be Disneyland. I know it’s corny to say, but there’s honestly no place like it. It’s a small and local theme park that provides top entertainment and immersion, and has a certain magic that in my opinion is lacking in larger resorts.
