We had the good fortune of connecting with Danny Roberts and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Danny, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
When I was really young, my mom had a Canon point and shoot camera. By today’s standards this thing was a potato—it barely had 2 megapixels to rub together. But WOW did that thing excite me. I wanted to take photos of everything. And I mean everything—like we would go to a museum and I’d literally take photos of other photos.

20+ years later, I still feel the same way when I hold a camera. There’s this sort of magic to it, this idea of embalming reality in any way you want.

What the school counselors don’t tell you is that photography is a gateway drug to pursuing a career in the arts. Take heed, parents.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Fresh Fish Films is still new—but we are already developing two feature films and are rapidly building out a slate of other projects. It’s been a whirlwind.

What sets us apart is that there is no hierarchy at FFF. Big decisions are made by majority vote, which is a trade off of efficiency for a mini democracy. I like to think that our ethos is all about collaboration, and it was important to us that our voices should carry equal weight. And it helps that we all get along really well.

Film is an industry that can be pretty toxic. We want to change that.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Ok if my friend is visiting, we would definitely have to go to a couple of my favorite restaurants. A perfect day might look something like the following:

First off, breakfast at Farmshop in Santa Monica. Followed by a quick hike with the dog at Will Rogers State Park. We let my dog Scruffy frolic off leash.

Then go home, and nap for two hours. The nap is essential.

Later, we go to the ping pong gym West Side Table Tennis. It’s important that I establish my superiority at ping pong.

Finally, we head to Los Feliz to eat at All Time for an early bird special dinner. It’s a fantastic restaurant. I bring Scruffy in to sit in their outdoor area. He loves table scraps.

Then we are back home and in bed by 9 pm sharp.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Honestly, the professors at USC are pretty remarkable. They’re just such nice people and wonderfully encouraging.

Katy Garretson, Rebekah McKendry, John Watson, Tim Marx, Jason Rosenfield, Reine-Claire, to name just a few. These are people who really inspire and make me want to be better when I’m around them.
