We had the good fortune of connecting with Jonathan Burkes and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jonathan, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
Well, since my brand is music and I play in bands, the most important factor of my success is live performance. Connecting with people through the live performance keeps our brand active, relevant and generating money. Plus, there is nothing like playing music for a crowd! Its my ultimate high.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My art is music. My passion lies in practicing, performing, recording and teaching music. I am proud of my accomplishments as a musician and teacher alike. When I see an inexperienced student apply what I have taught, I know all the years I’ve invested into my art was well worth the time. Being a musician is a long and tedious road to travel, however, I could never see myself doing anything else. I’ve learned to exercise patience, to practice as much as possible and to hold onto my dreams.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Monday: Breakfast would be at Teddy’s Cafe in West La. Then take a drive to Topanga and walk the Eagle Rock trail. Later we could eat at Baja Buds on national and Sepulveda. That night hit a live music venue. Many clubs have free music Monday shows like The Satellite in Silver Lake. Tuesday: Brunch would be at Crimson in Santa Monica. Then drive La County Museum of Art. They have interesting exhibits there periodically. At Night, head to downtown la and meet some people at a club or bar. Wednesday; Spend the day at Griffith Park Observatory. Hike up from the bottom and then check out the park. Thursday: Head to Japan Town on Sawtelle, eat some great food and buy some inexpensive supplies from the different shops. At night head to an open Jam with some amazing Musicians. Friday; Find a warehouse party in West Adams area or south central LA to go to and dance all nigh long! Saturday: Recover from the last night with a walk on the beach and late afternoon yoga session, Sunday: Spend the day on Venice boardwalk and head to the Townhouse bar at night.
