We had the good fortune of connecting with Daphne Miller and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Daphne, why did you pursue a creative career?
I’ve always been a storyteller. Whether it’s talking about my own experiences, writing a fictional tale, or creating marketing materials , I’ve always just wanted to tell a good story. I think the key is finding what’s interesting about anyone or anything and then relating it in a way that’s both engaging and understandable. Sharing stories via any artistic medium creates community and conversation and I’ve always found connection through storytelling.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My career has been a winding one, but always deeply rooted in creativity. I started out at a talent agency and then worked in development at production companies such as Ben Stiller’s Red Hour Films. I missed writing, so I worked my way onto a Nickelodeon series as a writers’ assistant and wrote an episode of the Hulu series Deadbeat after that. After the first season of Deadbeat I started writing freelance marketing materials to stay afloat and was eventually recruited to Capital Group, a financial institution, as a marketing writer. I had never taken an Econ class in my life, but it actually worked to my advantage because my writing had to be understandable for everyone, not just financial experts. It kept me on my toes and was a fun challenge to learn about financial markets and our products on the job. Eventually I became the creative manager of one of several small in-house marketing teams, reviewing every piece we create and managing several writers. Managing has really become my passion in that I love helping people navigate their careers and do their best work possible. I love finding ways for myself and for my team to be creative in the very regulated world of finance.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I am sort of a crazy culture junkie, so LA offers a ton of things to see, eat, do. I live in Silverlake and love grabbing a coffee at LA Mill and walking around the reservoir. After that you can walk right to L&E Oyster for the best shrimp cocktail and wedge salad you’ll ever have. I also love live music so checking out a show at Zebulon would definitely be on the docket. The Echo and Echoplex in Echo Park are also great and you can check out Echo Park lake right next door. Other east side restaurants I love are Saffys, Bacetti, Lonely Oyster and Ototo. I also love the Academy Museum which combines two of my great loves, art and cinema. Also, it may sound cheesy, but I adore Universal Studios; the studio tour still hits!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I’ve got to shout out my mother, Andrea Miller. Not only is she highly creative and successful as a film and TV producer, but she’s also a wonderful host and friend who has created her own community of talented women artist friends. My mother taught me the value of sharing stories with others and also about how powerful and deeply creative women can be, especially when they collaborate with one another.
