We had the good fortune of connecting with Daryce Tolliver and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Daryce, what is the most important factor behind your success?
My name is Daryce Tolliver and I founded, A Curl Can Dream hair salon, in January 2019. The most important factor behind my success and the success of my business is the ability to pivot. I made a decision a long time ago to marry the goal instead of the process. I recently read a quote that restated this same sentiment, “ write your goals in pen and your process in pencil.” What both these statements mean to me is THINGS WILL ALWAYS CHANGE. It’s YOU that has to stay dedicated, not to the how but to the why and what. I found out I was pregnant with my almost 2 year old 2 weeks after opening, after retuning from maternity leave we were all hit with the pandemic. I would be lying if I didnt admit I felt defeated at every point. My tenacity won’t let me quit though! So I showed up on social platforms and sold retail online while waiting for the green light to open back up. When we opened I offered only ONE appointment one that was all inclusive of what clients needed but was also the price point that would pay the bills. I was surprised clients paid it without a problem because it was a huge gamble. I’m learning to trust my judgement and my process. There is gold in betting on yourself and embracing the pivot.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I am a hair care specialist who has dedicated my career to helping Black women better understand and enhance what they have naturally. My salon model reflects our culture and history but adds in the science behind haircare so that the beauty industry’s number one target doesn’t fall for gimmicks that harm rather than help.
In the beginning things were hard because I was still actively doing market research, there wasn’t a lot of concrete updated information out there so I took it on as a challenge to figure it out. 8 years in and I’m making some headway. I’m most proud of my clients that have been with me for over 6 years being their own hair goals and experimenting will new looks, that exudes a confidence they didn’t once have in their hair.
I was told in cosmetology school that doing naturally coiled/curly hair was not a specialty and it wouldn’t make me any money. I’m proud to say that naturally coiled/curly hair has landed me some of my biggest partnerships with Loreal and Dyson. Have amassed me an online community of over 20,000 and a loyal client base in the heart of NYC
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Evie Johnson, the first stylist I ever assisted under. I learned most of how I operate and show up today from her. There were hard lessons in learning how to press hair out or learning to packs tech bag. But Evie taught me all that plus the most important which was in showing up on time and being prepared for anything. She taught me how to pivot.
