We had the good fortune of connecting with Dasia Childress and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Dasia, what’s the most important lesson your business/career has taught you?
This lesson may seem cliche but it’s so much deeper to me: NEVER GIVE UP. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve almost counted myself out and gave up on my dreams, but I didn’t and it has allowed me to reach heights that I never thought I would have. When you’re feeling insecure or inadequate, don’t give up. When you’re grieving or going through depression, don’t give up. If you feel like you don’t have resources, the audience, the guts to keep going…still don’t give up. Small steps lead to achieving big goals. The bible says “the plans of the diligent lead surely to abundance” and I can attest to this.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Das Butta was developed out of a personal need for natural skin-care products that wouldn’t break my bank. Growing up in Inglewood, there wasn’t access to healthy alternatives as far as skincare, food, or really anything. I was so accustomed to using products with harsh chemicals and it wasn’t until I did my research that I found out most of the things I would use on and in my body were disease-causing and cancerous. I began making body butter for myself and would always get comments about how healthy my skin looked and felt so I decided to turn my hobby into a business. The fact that I provide high-quality products for an inexpensive price sets me apart, Das Butta is both effective and affordable. The road here was far from easy, especially with juggling being a full-time student and having a full-time career in the social work field. However, my passion to heal my community through self-care and skincare motivates me to overcome any challenge that comes my way.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Oh wow, I love this question. If you know me you know I’m in love with my city. I take much pride in the gem that is Inglewood, the city of champs. I would start the week off with a bottomless mimosa brunch at Pann’s restaurant, they have the softest Belgian waffles ever. After brunch, we would take a stroll down Market street and visit some of the many coffee shops, restaurants, and stores such as the historic Inglewood Swap Meet or Ms. Ruby’s bakery. For lunch, we would go grab some enchiladas and Cadillac margaritas at Fiesta Martin while enjoying a live performance from their house entertainers. We would definitely take a tour of the more notable landmarks like the new SoFi stadium, the Hollywood Park Casino, and The Forum where the Los Angeles Lakers crowned my hometown the title of “City of Champions”. I’d make sure my BFF’s hair was laid and nails were done by taking them to Spa 313, a salon my mom manages that is also the biggest and best salon in Inglewood. Another cool place we could visit is the apartment building on Hyde Park where the tv show “Insecure” was filmed which is the first home I ever knew and now a tourist spot. Our itinerary wouldn’t be complete without riding down Manchester Blvd. with the music blasting and watching the planes fly overhead.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would like to dedicate my shoutout to my late father, Kevin Childress. A man with an imperfect background and upbringing that truly turned life’s lemons into lemonade. He was my best teacher that guided me through a variety of lessons about responsibility, finances, and even heartbreak. He was my biggest cheerleader (I know this interview would have been all over his Facebook), my safe haven, and my best friend. People spend a whole lifetime waiting to experience love and support like the one he’s shown me and I am eternally grateful. His legacy is keeping me motivated now, even in his absence.
