Meet Dave Clark | Filmmaker and Futurist

We had the good fortune of connecting with Dave Clark and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Dave, what role has risk played in your life or career?
I think about risk as a necessary part of growth and innovation. Taking risks is about stepping out of your comfort zone and venturing into the unknown. In my career, taking risks has been crucial. Whether it was being an early adopter of Generative AI and integrating AI into my filmmaking process or tackling unconventional storylines, these risks have led to some of my most rewarding experiences. Risk-taking pushes you to explore new ideas, fail, learn, and ultimately succeed in ways you never imagined. It’s about believing in your vision and having the courage to pursue it, despite the uncertainties. Each risk has shaped my career, making me a more resilient and innovative creator.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My art is rooted in the fusion of traditional storytelling and cutting-edge technology. What sets me apart is my dedication to exploring the boundaries of what’s possible in filmmaking through tools like AI. I’m most proud of my work on groundbreaking projects like “Another,” where technology was integral to the creative process, from pre-visualization to post-production. These projects showcased AI’s potential as a tool in enhancing visual storytelling and opened up new avenues for independent filmmakers to create high-quality content on a budget.
My journey to where I am today has been far from easy. It involved a lot of experimentation, learning, and taking significant risks. I started with a passion for storytelling and a curiosity about how technology could amplify that passion. The biggest challenges were balancing the artistic and technical aspects and ensuring that AI-generated content retained emotional depth. But more importantly. dancing on that fine line when it comes to the ethical use of AI. I overcame these challenges by constantly iterating on my processes, learning from failures, and staying committed to my vision while being understanding to my peers who may view it as controversial. Collaboration with like-minded creatives and technologists also played a crucial role in overcoming obstacles and pushing the boundaries of what we could achieve. Recently, when I spoke at the Cannes Film Festival, I was challenged when discussing how new emergent AI technology could benefit artists in the entertainment industry if they opened their minds to the future. The goal isn’t to take work away, but to create more avenues for filmmakers to thrive.
One of the critical lessons I’ve learned is the importance of continuous learning and adaptation. AI and filmmaking are rapidly evolving, and staying updated with the latest advancements is crucial. I’ve also learned that while technology can significantly enhance the creative process, the human element breathes life into a story.
I want the world to know that I’m all about pushing the boundaries of creativity through the integration of new technology. My journey is a testament to the power of innovation and the belief that technology and art can coexist to create something unique and democratize the filmmaking process. Through my films, initiatives, and work at Curious Refuge and Secret Level, I aim to inspire other filmmakers to embrace AI as a tool to enhance their storytelling capabilities.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Okay this is fun..
On the first day, we could start with a hearty breakfast at Eggslut in Grand Central Market. The egg sandwiches are so good. Then, maybe we’ll visit Griffith Observatory and Griffith Park.
We could see a film at TCL Chinese Theater in the next few days or catch a show at the Hollywood Bowl.
We’d have to spend a day at Santa Monica Beach and Pier. We could rent bikes and ride along the beach path to Venice Beach. That night, we could have dinner at Gjelina in Venice.
The following day, we could have breakfast at Bottega Louie, famous for its brunch.
That afternoon, we could visit the Broad Museum to see contemporary art. Maybe check out the shops on Rodeo Drive.
Over the weekend we could hit up Disneyland or Universal Studios of course. Then maybe on Sunday, although cliche, we can finish up the week hiking up Runyon Canyon to take it one more breathtaking view of the city!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My wife, Ashley. Not only is she one of my biggest inspirations, but without her, I would not be where I am today, both as a father to our three beautiful children and as a Filmmaker.
