We had the good fortune of connecting with Dave Tate and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Dave, what makes you happy? Why?
Writing a song in nature is my happy place. The moments in the performance when my self-criticism is turned off but my awareness is turned on. Those in-the-flow moments when it’s about the music, not about me, are what I do this for and when I get to share that with an audience it is truly special.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My art has been influence by everything from Punk Rock to Opera over the years. But I am primarily now a folk/acoustic singer-songwriter. Physical challenges kept me from reaching as far as I could for many years. I built the business of my original music and performed for weddings/corporate events over many years while working in the Outdoor retail industry in Zion National Park. The past 4 years I have been doing music full-time. It’s understanding both the creative and business aspects of music that have helped me succeed. But it’s mostly about grit, and commitment to yourself.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Hotel Cafe is a great spot My family has been taking trips to Newport Beach since I was a kid and that’s my favorite place to relax.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My vocal teachers Cindy Dewey and Linda Brice are the reason I am able to perform 150+ shows per year in a vocally sustainable way. They both contributed to teaching me the foundations of technique and interpretation that give me the tools to let my own music through a clearer channel. The other thing that has improved my ability to practice my craft immeasurably is yoga. Steve Ilg was my first mentor in that area and his teachings have stuck with me over the years.
The hundreds of venues and promotors that have supported me over the years. I couldn’t do this without their support and of course the people who support my music by listening. They give me a reason to keep going.
