We had the good fortune of connecting with David J Redman and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi David J, is there something you can share with us that those outside of the industry might not be aware of?
The hours and industry as a whole doesn’t make sense to anybody outside of it. On the creative side there isn’t a corporate ladder to climb or consistent hours. One day you might work 4hrs, and the next 18hrs. Also the highs are high and the lows are low. It can be the most collaborative of environments as well as the most isolated.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I’m a writer/director that works on music video, commercial, and film projects. I’ve worked in this industry since I was 18 and have progressively built a brand around my work. I run my own production company with my business partner Matt Tipold (RedTip Productions) and am commercially represented as a director by TrePalm. The one thing that I believe has gotten me this far is resilience. Some days are tougher than others, but you just got to keep grinding through it.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I’m still pretty new to LA so I don’t have the ‘secret cool spots’, but going to a game, concert, comedy show, or heading down to the beach is always a good time.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My shoutout would be to my mom, without question. My mom is a successful business owner and artist. Watching her be a single mom juggling work and family made me believe that anything was possible. Not to mention she’s my biggest cheerleader and has supported every decision I’ve ever made.
