We had the good fortune of connecting with Kim Harrington and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kim, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
Having spent a wonderful and very fun career in advertising I reached a point where I wanted to do something for myself. I had spent years looking after brands and making other peoples creative ideas a reality, it left me with a desire to do something of my own.

I had two big passions Yoga and Nutrition. I have been practicing yoga for years (My Mum introduced me to it as a young girl) and since turning vegetarian at 16 I found myself fascinated by food and its nutritional benefits.

So I combined both my passions and launched myself out into the world offering yoga in its many forms, the physical practice (asana) breath work (pranayama) and meditation (Yoga Nidra and guided meditations) combined with nutrition tools rooted in Ayurveda (the Indian science of life).

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I offer daily zoom and in person group classes for adults at my home in the Pacific Palisades. Nestled up in the Santa Monica Mountains we practice outdoors, in the shade, with an ocean breeze.

I’m also fortunate to get to work with children as young as 8 and I have a beautiful group of teenagers whom I’ve run camps and retreats for. I also find myself back in the corporate world teaching groups and individuals in their places of work and I feel honored to work in addiction treatment centers.

It was always my ambition to teach a wide variety of yogis and thanks a lot to the pandemic (which kept me out of yoga studios) I have been able to do this.

My training wasn’t a crash course, I started young and I continue to train and learn. I grew up in the Highlands of Scotland and started my training in the UK, followed by Europe and then the US. I trained in tandem as I worked, during my pregnancies and as we moved around the world!

As a Yoga Alliance certified teacher, I’m grateful for the requirement and the encouragement to continue to train, I believe like my yogis who come to learn from me, that it’s my responsibility to keep my teachings current and fluid.

It fills me with so much joy to see my yogi’s come to the mat to re-connect with themselves, with each other and to take their teachings off the mat and into the world.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I love when we have friends and family come visit us in LA. We always take them to the beach! Malibu has so many beautiful beaches, I actually teach on Broad Beach and its one of my favorite places to be as its so quiet! Topanga is another great destination, there are so many new creative stores up there and we love to eat at Endless Color Pizza. We love to visit the museums downtown too, the Broad, MoCa and LACMA then get sushi in Little Tokyo or ramen at E.A.K on Melrose. Our most favorite eating place to impress our visitors is Damian in the Arts District, the food and the atmosphere make for a very memorable experience.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Absolutely, My Mum, she has been hands down the single most constant source of inspiration and support my whole life, she introduced me to the beautiful practice of yoga at a very young age and she continues to live life fully practicing yoga into her 70’s with the energy and enthusiasm of a teenager.

I have been fortunate to work with many wonderful yoga teachers and mentors over the years, too many to mention here however there is one place called Svaha Yoga in Amsterdam , every time I enter the building I have a sense of coming home, getting closer to source – this place and its many wonderful teachers inspired me to go teach yoga and be a better person.

Then all of the yogis and yoginis who practice with me, their energy and curiosity fuels my classes. My beautiful children who not only join in with my offerings, they offer so much encouragement and enthusiasm too. My incredibly creative husband who see’s so much good in me and is always there to help put the finishing touches on all my communication materials.
