We had the good fortune of connecting with Stephen Johnson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Stephen, what is the most important factor behind your success?
The most important factor behind my success is the determination to succeed on my own terms. Life is filled with distractions and opinions that beg for our attention. As an entrepreneur, author, investor, and mindset & success coach – I have learned that the greatest superpower of any human being is our ability to remain loyal to our own vision in life. This starts with developing yourself in alignment with your greatest imagination for your life. This includes education, networking, and, perhaps most importantly, continuously letting go of our self-limiting beliefs!
My story is one of very humble beginnings. Raised by a single teenage mother in a community plagued by poverty, gang violence, and drug abuse – I am very aware of how external circumstances can seek to dictate what is possible in life. I had to learn early on to focus more of my energy internally and to start with my own vision in life as my personal GPS.
Becoming an entrepreneur is a byproduct of living by this simple, yet difficult to maintain, ethos. As I continued to develop and educate myself in alignment with my highest aspirations it became clear that taking responsibility for my earning potential and my happiness in life could only be accomplished through creating a business around my passions. This decision changed my entire world and continues to be the bedrock of everything I do.
I’ve consolidated my thoughts on this into a concept I call: UNITY. Unity is a three step, nonlinear, process that can radically change any persons life at any time! The three steps are: Imagination + Aligned Action + Emotion. The proper use of these three elements in life can have an alchemical effect that shifts your life into the direction you most desire. These internal levers are three of the main elements that I use daily in my life and in my businesses.
Success comes from seeing in reality what was once only in your imagination and knowing how to activate that power at will!
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I love to work with people who are struggling to find the self confidence they need to go all in and bet on themselves! I’ve worked with students and their families who are finding their way through the college admissions process as well as with early stage professionals and entrepreneurs who are finding their footing in life and discovering who they want to be in life.
I am beyond grateful for the success I have experienced with my clients and feel blessed to call many of them my friends. I think that this is something that sets me apart. I truly care. Deeply. I approach every person I work with with the same love and intensity I would if they were my best friend or family member.
No path is easy. And mine is no different. I remember going bankrupt a few years back and all of the associated emotions leading up to that point. But that’s what is exciting about entrepreneurship! There is always the possibility of circumstances arising that are out of your control. My experience was one that taught me so much about myself that I wouldn’t trade that pain for anything. I have learned to truly be grateful for everything in life. Every experience. Every up and every down! Life is like a marathon and the only sustainable goal is to not give up. Everything else is temporary. Desires come and go. Certain successes come and go. Things change and shift all of the time. My focus stays on aligning my actions with my vision of life and never giving up, period.
This is my legacy. It is the characteristic that I want the world to most know about me! That I am committed to my success in life through expressing the unique combination of gifts and talents I have. My life is an example to others that they can also live a big life that experiences all of their dreams in spite of where they start in life and despite the many peaks and valleys they experience in life!
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If a friend was visiting from out of town for a week I’d definitely start our time in Hollywood. By no means is it representative of all that LA is – but, it does represent how most out of owners view LA and there are some worthwhile spots to hit on day 1 to set the tone for the trip. I love going for an early morning hike in Runyon Canyon, followed by brunch at The Butcher, The Baker, and The Cappuccino Maker on the Sunset Strip. I’d wrap up the day in Hollywood with walking down Hollywood Blvd. and seeing the walk of stars, checking out the Hollywood & Highland shopping center, the Wax Museum, and checking out the beautiful homes in nearby Hancock Park and taking a break at a cafe in nearby Larchmont Village.
From Hollywood we’d head west to the Santa Monica / Venice area. I lived and worked in this area for a long time and would definitely hit up the 3rd Street Promenade and the Santa Monica Pier. One of my favorite Thai restaurants, Thai Dishes, is in Santa Monica, and some of the best, and innovative, ice cream shops: Salt & Straw in Venice. The Venice Beach boardwalk is also a must and for dinner visit my friends who own C&O Trattoria in Marina Del Rey.
The rest of the week would include trips to Universal Studios, Disneyland, and Magic Mountain. The last few days would be reserved for a more chill vibe in Malibu and my favorite restaurant, Nobu. As well as at the opposite end of LA at the Terrenea Resort in Palos Verdes to soak in some sun.
Any trip to LA must also include a visit to Beverly Hills and shopping on Rodeo Drive, going to In N Out and I also personally love donuts from MochiNut. Catching a movie at the Century City Shopping center and catching one of our cities’ great sports teams: Lakers, Dodgers, or Rams.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to give a shout out to my Mom, Crissina Johnson! Without her sacrifice and love throughout my life I would not be who I am. She is now a successful author, speaker, and parent coach continuing to serve others in love and compassion!
I also thank my wife, Noemy Johnson! My college sweetheart and the mother of our four children. There is absolutely no way that I can continue to push forward in manifesting my dreams in life without her love and support! Outside of being the BEST Mom in the world she is also a plant consultant who loves to educate individuals, families, and companies about how to bring nature into their homes and businesses to enjoy for years to come!
