We had the good fortune of connecting with Ali Mohamed and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Ali, why did you pursue a creative career?
I always did well in school, but the idea of working a garbage job never sat right with me growing up. I have a degree in Marketing and figured I could put it to good use on my own terms. Becoming a VFX artist and production assistant really opened my eyes. I believe anyone can make a living off of their art as long as they are dedicated.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am able to tackle a project from an angle that most people would not expect. The easiest way to set yourself apart from others is to stop and think about what these people aren’t doing. There are so many music videos being created, yet many editors choose the simple effects that are “safe” and easily consumable by viewers. It is not easy to disrupt the industry. I want the world to know that I am just getting started. I taught myself how to do VFX and music production through YouTube. The biggest challenge up ahead is learning 3D.
My podcast with Chriscameraguy has been going great. We’re on the road to 1k subscribers by next year!
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I am not the type of person to go out and find cute little places down by the beach. We’re going to Universal Studios or Disneyland and that’s the end of that, haha. My friend could probably find something to do in my area before I could think of something.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
There are 3 people that I believe have impacted my story. Christopher Shaibi (Chriscameraguy) is an awesome director and friend who influenced me to start my own business. Jessica Moncrief is another friend of mine. She is one of the best photographers around and we work together with Chris to create amazing content with her immense knowledge. Lastly, Sherise Ford is an incredible publicist based in Los Angeles. She brought me out to many red carpet events over the past year and introduced me to high profile people.
