We had the good fortune of connecting with David Joyner and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi David, what’s the most important lesson your business/career has taught you?
The most important lesson that I have learned on my creative career journey is that the pendulum will always swing, so it is best to never get too high on the highs or too low on the lows.
Granted, while this advice is a very inspirational way of approaching life in general and an even more zen approach to being a creative making a career in the creative arena; it still remains very hard to execute.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My art has always been and will always be the biggest form of expression for me. While I never really struggle to find the words when communicating, my art serves as more of an unfiltered glimpse into what I am really about.
What sets me apart is that I have placed myself in a position to execute and understand nearly every step of the artistic process that applies to me. I have been an artist, recording and mixing engineer, music producer, photographer, videographer, graphic designer, video editor, copywriter. In the midst of doing all of these things and wearing all of these hats, I refuse to compromise on the quality of my work and the passion I put into it. This is what enabled me to start my own creative content business, 82Infinity Media.
I have been able to get to this point in my career, by simply refusing to give up and always “rocking what I got”! Meaning, no matter where I am in the process, using whatever tools I have at my disposal to make the best outcome. By doing this I have learned how to create within confines and being even more effective and creative when I was able to get better tools.
It is these simple ideologies that I live by and model my business 82Infinity Media by. I make sure to share this with my clients in hopes that it can help them along their creative journey as well.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If my best friend came to LA, I would show them the most local-esque vibes possible. I am a pretty chilled out individual that likes local LA vibes.
So I would say, we would have to catch breakfast at Blue Jam Cafe ( I like the Sherman Oaks location), grab pastor tacos at Leo’s tacos with extra pineapple for lunch one day, catch a sunset in Rancho Palos Verdes near the Terranea, have dinner at Gwen and get some of the duck fat potatoes on another day.
Depending on the time of year, hit PCH head up to Ojai and get some good fruit and dolphin / whale watch.
Hit up LBC and get some killer coffee at Portfolio Coffeehouse, and fly drones near rosie’s dog beach or go to El Segundo brewery and grab some great brews on tap then head down to Burratino’s pizza for a pie down in Pedro.
Its always cool to hit a event at the forum, and grab carne asada fries from LAX Taco after or just chill and watch the planes land next to the In and Out off of PCH.
Also, now that events are coming back, hit the Bowl for a show and bring a nice bottle of wine!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to dedicate this shoutout to my late, beloved grandmother Ethel Lee Wright!
This woman is probably the strongest woman I have ever known. She raised 9 children, was a faithful member of her church for nearly 40 years, and when she passed had over 500 people attend her funeral.
She taught me everything about love, patience, selflessness, and to always be a badass (her nickname was ‘Trouble’ but I called her ‘Mine’)!
Without her, there would be no me, and I hope that I can keep making her proud and be the man that she always instilled in me to be.
I love you, Mine!
