We had the good fortune of connecting with David Julfayan and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi David, what is the most important factor behind your success?
It is difficult to pinpoint exactly one factor that has helped my business thrive as there are many facets contributing to my success. However, there came a point when, reflecting on my brand and what I have achieved, I realized how much of an influence my family and friends had on some of my greatest projects. The constant support that I have received from those closest to me and the connections that I have made through them are what keep Christopher By David alive even through the toughest of times.
The past two years allowed me to appreciate the people in my life even more. As a small business with a niche online presence, most of my networking is done through word of mouth and personal connections. When the world stopped due to the pandemic, it was through my dear friends and family that I was able to secure and supply my candles for numerous events and collaborations. These experiences provided me with more exposure, a foothold in the community, and the motivation to keep working hard in order to grow my business.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I wanted to create a brand that is genuine, reliable, and innovative. These days it is all about the ‘aesthetic’ that a photo or product can bring to a particular environment. I try to build off of this to tell a story through my product photos and set the tone for a room with my candles and, more recently, my diffusers. At the end of the day, candlemaking is a form of art that should be appreciated.
I produce luxury products that are a treat for the eyes as well as the nose. Only 100% Non-GMO Soy Wax is used for my candles with pure fragrance oils to fill a room with beautiful and clean scents.
I am excited to grow my business with the addition of more product collections and fun side-projects such as collaborations with other fellow business owners. I have learned that a positive mindset and a strong support system can get you very far in life. Most importantly, action is needed to reach your goals and it all starts with the first step in the right direction.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
The perfect day with my best friend would start with an early morning hike along the beach to take in the morning sun and fresh air. After working up an appetite and freshening up, we would head over to Glendale for brunch at G Lounge, a hotspot for some of the best food and drinks in Los Angeles.
Since we live in sunny California, it would be a shame not to take advantage of the good weather. While we have the midday sun over our heads, I would call more of my friends to gather at my house to enjoy the pool with some good music and positive vibes.
We would then end our night at The Brandy, a restaurant and lounge I previously collaborated with, for more delicious food, drinks, and hookah. The live DJs on the weekends make it a lively kick-back spot with great music – the perfect way to end the perfect day.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Without a doubt and most passionately, I would like to dedicate my continual growth and success to my parents. When I started Christopher By David, I was still in school pursuing a biology degree at UCLA – learning life’s lessons, who I am, and who I want to become. Throughout this time, my parents supported my business ventures and gave me the morale and confidence to take the necessary steps to expand my brand. They allowed me to use their space to work and put up with my long nights. Without their mentoring and guidance I would have been lost as soon as I started my brand. So, thank you mom and dad for your unconditional love and support.
