We had the good fortune of connecting with David Law and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi David, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I started 3rd Call Productions my last year of my medical residency. I was stressed out medical resident who had left filmmaking behind years ago… or so I thought. After producing a few funny medical satire videos for my program, I founded ‘3rd Call Productions’ as a way to formalize the filmmaking hobby that my friends and I had been doing for years. In 2018, we started creating short films for the film festival circuit. “The Uppermost”, our first horror short, won “Best Short’ in our category at the Utah Film Festival in 2019. “Code’, our medical drama centered on physician burnout, won us “Best Director” for the Short Category at the Golden State Film Festival and “Best Actress’ for Ms. Cherubim Abueme at the Marina Del Rey Film Festival!

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I love the movies! I grew up in Los Angeles and spent much of my free time watching movies with my friends and family. In LA, movies were not just something seen on the Silver Screen- they were written and produced right there in my very backyard!

I set aside Creativity for a time to focus on Medicine and my professional career. However, when the time was right, I gathered my creative crew, (consisting of my very talented of childhood friends who are all professional creatives), and launched ‘3rd Call Productions’ with production of ‘The Uppermost’, our first short film for the festival circuit. Learning the process of making a movie was quite challenging but ultimately rewarding. Los Angeles is a city of filmmakers and what we didn’t know we were able to learn from the many working professionals all around us. Filmmaking is as much creative experience as it is an educational one!

3rd Call Productions continues to produce films and has several projects lined up for the coming season. We are excited to expand on our existing filmmaking skill set and hope you enjoy our cinematic offerings!

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Been hard to get out lately, but with the world reopening, we love hanging out in KoreaTown and dining on Korean BBQ. Also, LA is the land of theme parks and with Universal Studios, Knotts Berry Farm, and Disneyland reopening, there’s no shortage of places to go!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Dedicated to Mr. Jim Banim, the beloved band director from West Torrance High School, who was responsible for bringing the crew together in high school and kept supporting our art and creativity until his passing in 2019.
