Meet David Smith | Cinematographer

We had the good fortune of connecting with David Smith and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi David, what role has risk played in your life or career?
I had a successful career in the tech industry before deciding to ditch it all and go to film school. I didn’t know exactly what I wanted to be or do, but I had a drive to make a change in my life and trust that if I just worked hard enough, I would come out the other side.
It has been rocky at times, but with perseverance and openness to different opportunities, I’ve built a new career.
Sometimes it can be very rewarding to just jump in to new things with both feet and see where they take you.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Because of my background in Software Engineering, I bring a lot of technical knowledge and troubleshooting to a film set.
One of the biggest things I’ve had to learn is to listen to my instincts and be able to express my emotional reactions to a shot, so I that I can figure out how to make it the best it can be.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
My favorite part of the Bay Area is the wine country just to the north. It has beautiful landscapes, historic buildings, and is the best way to relax and unwind.
When in San Francisco, you have to try Tony’s Pizza in North Beach – it’s just like being in Italy.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My teacher, friend and podcast co-host, Eric Katsuleres.
