We had the good fortune of connecting with Paul McCreesh and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Paul, maybe we can start at the very start – the idea – how did you come up with the idea for your business?
After abandoning a career in corporate America and returning to the construction industry–which I was raised in–I had a different perspective on it all. I was an adult, and felt a greater responsibility toward this planet and its inhabitants. Issues of sustainability compelled me to try to work in ways to figure out how to make a living as an entrepreneur while also leaving the world in a better place than I had found it.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
We are the GreenGuys, Chris Lucas and Paul McCreesh. Based in Palm Springs, we specialize in ecologically sound residential and commercial new construction and remodeling in the Desert Cities area of the Coachella Valley.

I am a licensed general contractor in the State of California (Lic. #981346), and both Chris and I were Members of the USGBC (United States Green Building Council), local Coachella Valley Chapter.

We were also part of the Green Builders Program that was co-sponsored by builditgreen.org and NARI (the National Association of the Remodeling Industry). This was the pilot program in Northern California that helped bring green awareness and education to builders, contractors, and business owners.

At GreenGuys, we are dedicated to educating prospective and current clients about the benefits of green building techniques and products, and are committed to introducing and advancing green building practices.

Whether you need a bathroom or kitchen remodeled, an addition placed on your existing home, the completion of a large-scale industrial job, or the building of a new structure from the ground up, the GreenGuys are the guys for you—especially if you want the work ecologically sound in design, construction, and maintenance.

And remember: Going green need not cost more than “traditional” building. In fact, in most cases, over time, it is more economically advantageous.

The GreenGuys are available to consult with you at every stage of your new residential building project: Planning – Sourcing / Purchasing – Project Management – General Contracting.

As for how GreenGuys began, I was raised in a construction family. After a long, ultimately unsatisfying stint in corporate America as an account manager for a branding firm, I decided to return to my roots. When I did, I was horrified at the amount of waste that occurs in construction.

Immediately upon starting my business, I therefore not only taught myself how to recycle and repurpose building materials but educated myself on ecologically sound construction practices through my involvement with the aforementioned organizations.

Because I launched my business in the Bay Area, I found potential clients quite receptive to what was then still a new way of approaching renovation and building. People “got” green.

But when Chris and I relocated to the Palm Springs area, we found that audiences here were not so savvy, and needed more education as to the benefits of green building. So sorely lacking in knowledge were people in our new environment that we gave classes in green building theory to fellow construction professionals. I also volunteered at College of the Desert, guest lecturing for a natural sciences class.

While it took perseverance at first, once we started sharing the information we’d learned, we found that people were quite interested and quickly understood the advantages inherent in this new way of building.

After more than 20 years in our current practice, we remain dedicated to sustainable building methods, and to bringing clients who may not be well-versed in state-of-the-art practices up to speed.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
In trendy Palm Springs–a small town that plays on an international scale–hot spots are ever-changing. A walk up and down our main thoroughfare, Palm Canyon Drive, will acquaint both residents and visitors–including newcomers–to all that our beautiful city places at their disposal. What doesn’t ever change in the desert is the myriad opportunities for outdoor recreation, be that hiking in our beautiful mountains and canyons, stargazing under our twinkling skies, or simply relaxing by the pool. Oh, and don’t forget to take a ride 8,500 feet up in the air to Mount San Jacinto via our Palm Springs Aerial Tramway, one of our most popular tourist attractions.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would like to dedicate this Shoutout to my husband, Chris Lucas, who first supported my decision to leave corporate America and hang out my own shingle as a contractor, and who then joined me in the endeavor when the business warranted my welcoming an equal partner.
