We had the good fortune of connecting with Daviontae Walker and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Daviontae, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
Pursuing an artistic career has allowed me to tap into my passion for self-expression and having the ability to connect with others through the display of my visions. For me it was really about exploring and pushing boundaries. While on the other hand being a creative allows me to have a sense of fulfillment by being able to bring other people’s ideas as well as mine to life.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Early on into my drag career I started off doing amateur competitions which I did not always win but I didn’t let it stop me. Although I may not have won these competitions I did have amazing opportunities arise from participating in them. At some point I did begin to be hard on myself and question if what I was doing was good enough. As an artist we tend to be our own worst critics. But I didn’t let it stop me or bring me down. I continued to work on myself as an artist and creative all around. That rejection had given me a drive that I didn’t have before. It helped me be more confident and believe that anything I set my mind to I can achieve. With that being said I would like people to know that just because things don’t always go the way you expect them to go or how you would like them does not determine your validation on your art. Rejection is usually protection and one door closing is opportunity for another! Just keep striving to be the best you that you know you’re called of being!
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Our first stop would be to hit the beach! There’s so much to do and enjoy there. At some point during the week we would of course have to have a night or day in West Hollywood. How could we not. Depending on who’s in town that week try and catch a music show if possible!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would first love to give a huge shoutout to drag family, The House of Jete! Becoming a member of the house of Jete had really helped me grow as an individual and guide me to find the kind of performer that I really wanted to be. I was encouraged to step out of my comfort zone and try new things. Following that, I would love to give a shoutout to everyone who has ever given me a chance to display my talents through out the years. Having support coming from friends, family and so many others have helped push me to continuing chasing my dreams.
