We had the good fortune of connecting with Davon Mcdonald and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Davon, how did you come up with the idea for your business?
I spent the majority of my young life trying to “fit in”. Not undertanding that I was made to stand out. After losing my job in 2019, at 35, I decided I will no longer fear starting over and if I wanted to be happy then I needed to persue my passions. And one of passions was to start my own brand. I didn’t want to just make T-shirts and sell them, I wanted there to be a meaning behind it. If this was going to be my brand, then it had to represent who I am. Getting theraphy and healing from past trauma has been at the forefront of my life and I knew that was something I wanted incorporated in this project. Now I just needed a name. Since I wasn’t meant to “fit in”, I wanted create a space for any and everyone. No matter what age, gender, sexual orientation, body type or religion. Everyone is included. And thats how the name came about. Now I had to do a play on words and the letter E fit so perfect. So many positive words start with the letter E;
So that is the back story to how I came up with Enkluded. Good things always come out of a bad situation.
What should our readers know about your business?
Getting Theraphy made me want to be an advocate for mental health awarness, It’s important that we take care of our mental health before anything. I wanted that to be apart of Enkludeds mission statement. We are a brand that focuses on mental health awarness and lets you know that you don’t have to suffer in silence because we are all Enkluded. Aside from clothing, I started a Facebook group for Men. A safe space for men of all walks of life to come together and just talk, vent and lean on eachother. I did my first campain for Aids awarness last year. A disease that effects not just the LGBTQ+ community but all communities. We wanted to encourge people to get tested. By doing that, we created a T shirt and donated proceeds to the Aids walk APLA Health foundation. Our goal was $1000 and we did over $1300. That was an awesome accomplishment and something that meant so much to me. I not only want to bring awarness but also give back by donating to organizations that are working towards bulding up the community. It take balance to do all of this because Enkluded is not my bread and butter. I have a full-time job that loves to drain me of all my energy. But because Enkluded is my baby, I don’t mind putting in the work it takes for it to grow. When you are passionate about something, it’s natural that you put so much energy into it. But I leraned that when your are starting a business, you treat it like a flower. Once the seed is planted, give it all the water and sunlight it needs to grow. And sometimes you may need to position it in another space or start over in a new pot. But once the process starts, you must be patient and let it grow. Flowers dont grow overnight. but one day you’re going to see your flower blossom into something beauiful. Enkluded is still growing and I’m enjoying seeing the growth.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
That’s funny, because one of my friends visited in January and he hasn’t been to LA in 10 years. I live in West Hollywood, so I had to give him the West hollywood experience. The night life is live but during the day, especially sunday Funday is just as fun, because who doesnt like day driinking? Food and drinks at The Abbey, Trunks, Beaches, Rocoe’s, just to name a few. you can just hop from one bar to the next and enjoy good music and good company. You also can’t be in LA and not hike. One of my favorit trails is Griffith park. Not only do you get to see the Griffith observatory but you get clear views of the Hollywood sign. Great for Instagram pics. A few miles down from griffith is one of my favorite Restaurants, Home. There are 2 locations but the location on Hillurst in Los Feliz is the best. They have a huge outside seating centered by a huge tree and pond. Great food, with vegan options and they are dog friendly. And best of all they serve breakfast all day.
You also can’t visit LA and not go to the beach. no matter what the weather looks like. My favorie thing to do is go to Venice beach, rent roller skates and roller skate for miles looking at the beautiful ocean view. and nothing better than ending by cooling off in the water.
There is a hidden gem in korea town called The Yellow House. its a tea house. The place is literally a yellow house, but the surprise is the huge outside back patio. a nice place to chill and have, tea, coffee or dessert. You can order a smores platter and you and your group can roast marshmallows at the table. And if you so happen to want food, they do have great Asian dishes.
Food is literally the theme of my tours. My family is from the south and we love BBQ and fried foods. South LA has the best spots. Serving spoon is great spot for chicken and waffles and its also black owned. And I have yet to find a better BBQ spot than Woodys.
There are other great tourist spots like Rodeo dr, Melrose ave, LACMA and Hollywood blvd.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I took advice from Issa Rae when she said, call on your friends who are perssuing their passions part-time. And that’s exactly what I did. I want to shout out a few people who helped me along the way. My photographer Hamza with Modern Times Photography ( IG – hamzawiththesauce) . My graphic artist Arturo (IG – 1FITKING) And my videographers Rick ( IG – rick2fresh) and Brian (IG – brianfilm35) They all saw my vision and made it come to life.
