We had the good fortune of connecting with DeAnna and David Park and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi DeAnna and David, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
We were both teachers, each of us with close to 20 years of experience. As we moved into mid-life, we felt that there was something else calling to us, however, we didn’t know what that was. Around this time a friend told us about an incredible hypnosis experience he had called, Quantum Healing Hypnosis Technique, or QHHT. (This is past life regression hypnosis.) We were intrigued and wanted the experience as well. That was the beginning of us being catapulted onto a new career path. It was unplanned and we were both surprised at the pull we felt to do this type of work. After a summer of training in the QHHT technique and over 100 hrs. of intern work with clients, we had some chops but felt there was more to learn so we searched out HMI, College of Hypnotherapy. After an additional full year of training, and 500 credit hours we were Certified Hypnotherapists. Our love for this new craft didn’t stop there, as we both took additional certifications to deepen our knowledge base and specialize in our chosen areas. Without going into too much detail, we had fully jumped in with both feet. Between teaching part time, taking our training, working with new hypnosis clients, building an online presence, and all of the other “to dos” when starting a new business, sometimes the stress was almost unbearable. We were exhausted and stretched and often wondered if we could make it. Fortunately, we had one another to lean on, which was invaluable. In the end, we always came back to knowing that what we could provide with hypnotherapy would help people unlock an inner potential that usually goes untapped. And for that reason, we pulled those boot straps up, and kept pushing forward keeping our goal in site. There are a few things you just “know” in life… and for both of us, this was one of them. Fast forward a few years…we are both full time certified hypnotherapists, with top rankings online and steady stream of clients both new and repeat. One of the unexpected bonuses of that whole experience is that our relationship as husband and wife has an additional layer of intimacy and trust. Since we chose to navigate the waters of becoming small business owners together, it demanded a whole other set of interpersonal skills. To say that it was all worth it, would be a huge understatement and the feeling of seeing a vision become a reality is unmatched. And to have your best friend next to you in the process, well, that’s just icing on the cake!
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
As a husband-wife hypnotherapist team we have a daily “built in” colleague to inspire consistent professional growth. We find ourselves often challenging one another to innovate our individual specialties and grow our breath of knowledge in our field. We get a little competitive with each other sometimes, pushing each other to stretch in new ways, and that’s fun! Something that sets us apart is the fact that we have developed in-depth programs which cater to Women’s, Men’s and Children’s needs. Although we certainly work on general issues, (such as quitting smoking, stress relief, motivation, depression, anxiety, weight loss, and phobias) we have taken our individual areas of expertise a step further and honed our skills to help with very specific core issues. These areas of our practice help our clients untangle themselves from limiting beliefs and unwanted behaviors or habits that have had them stuck for years. DeAnna- For example, I’ve taken specific training related to Weight Loss, PTSD, Anxiety and Childhood Trauma. As a result, I’ve been able to integrate each of those into a few different programs which allows client to dive deep into core issues and limiting beliefs without re-traumatizing them. This type of work allows the Subconscious mind to gently release toxic beliefs and behaviors therefore allowing people to overcome things which before, seemed insurmountable. It’s quite remarkable really, and I’m still blown away at how quickly these inner shifts happen! One of the programs I’m proudest of is my Inner Child Series. Using hypnosis, I am able to help people who suffered from a varying degrees of childhood trauma, neglect or abandonment. We are able to connect with and heal the “child within” without causing any more suffering and help them build deep feelings of self-worth and confidence where before, it was lacking. I’m often told that by using hypnosis, my clients are able to do months’ worth of inner work in just a few sessions. It’s such a pleasure to offer that kind of help and support to our community! David- We, as far as we can tell, are the only husband-wife team in Long Beach, where we both work and live. Currently we are working individually to develop solid programs within our specified areas of interest, but we are also looking to develop a program in which we work together with couples and groups. One area I’ve been focusing my energy towards lately is working with children and their families. This current educational environment, in regards to COVID-19, has been very difficult on children and they are not exempt from feeling the stress and anxiety of their experience. I’m very proud of the work I’ve done in effectively taking a lot of the pressure and stress off of the kids and their parents. And, something I’m excited about is offering support as well as a program to men and the specific issues they deal with in this day and age. It’s something I’ve become passionate about over the 20yrs. spent as an educator/counselor working with dads and their sons. I’m thrilled to be offering this work in a hypnotherapeutic setting. Together, it is our honor to assist our clients in dislodging themselves from what is not working for them any longer so they can step into a new chapter, one that puts them in the driver’s seat. DeAnna- As a previous business owner myself, the transition into this field was relatively smooth. This was David’s first venture into the business world, lucky for him I’m open to sharing my trade secrets and lucky for me, he’s a quick study! Our first big challenge, like many other small business owners, was when the pandemic shut everything down. Even though we’re considered essential as supporting mental health, we were concerned with working in person. Fortunately, we quickly modified our practice over to online sessions. An online option gave everyone peace of mind combined with effective hypnosis sessions. Learning to be flexible and adapting to unforeseen change has been an immeasurable benefit to keeping our business thriving. For us, we believe our success comes down to people feeling our authentic love for what we do and the integrity of wanting to help them to find that “thing” which is holding them back from their own best life. As they realize that we can help them harness their own personal power by getting the Subconscious mind to work with them, rather than against them, the sky becomes the limit! And that’s a pretty amazing thing to call your career!
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Long beach has a wealth of delicious family owned restaurants that we frequent. Some of our favorites would have to be: Taco Tuesdays at El Chile Bravo, Thai Basil in Lakewood, Flamin’ Curry on Broadway, and our neighborhood Nashville hot chicken sandwich spot, Cluck and Blaze! We’d also have to head over to the Library Coffee house for their comfy ambiance, some tasty sweet treats and a cup of joe! No visit to Long Beach would be complete without a bit of a stroll on Retro Row (4th street) for one of a kind vintage treasures and the bluffs along Ocean Blvd to take in our amazing harbor view, crowned by the Queen Mary herself!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Together we’d both like to give shoutouts to one another. We are keenly aware of how our dynamic encourages each of us to push forward and become our best selves, as well as acknowledge our individual gifts that we each bring to our practice. We would also like to express our deepest appreciation to HMI College of Hypnotherapy for their exemplary program, staff and especially our incredibly brilliant and patient mentor, Elaine Perliss, C.Ht. DeAnna – I would like to recognize and honor my mother, Evelyn Shelton, who passed away in Septembper. My mother’s brave and adventuresome spirit imprinted on me so that, like her, I learned to love “living outside the box”. For me, that meant persistence in pushing forward through some really difficult challenges and leaning into my fullest potential, even if other’s may think you’re nuts. David – I’d like to dedicate my shoutout to my children. I have two outstanding sons, both in their mid-twenties and an amazing 17yr. old daughter. They may not know it but they motivate me to be a better man and human being. I want to convey to them that it is never too late to start over with new ideas, adventures or dreams. And, as we move through our lives it is absolutely doable to change careers whenever the call to action arrives! It may be an essential aspect of life quite possibly.
