Meet Deborah Drummond | Ultrapreneur

We had the good fortune of connecting with Deborah Drummond and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Deborah, do you have a favorite quote or affirmation?
I do have a favourite quote. It is a quote that I live by so strongly that it is on the home page of my website. It says, “it is the moments not the hours that shift your business”. The reason why I love that quote so dearly is because it is truly applicable in all areas. We hear the adage that life can change on a dime, and when you think about a dime, it is not a lot of money. It really is the small things you do that make the big impact on your business. It truly is fundamental. I get asked quite often how I manage to juggle 3, 4, 5 companies, and now starting to do another business with my son. It really is in the moments. People waste time that they don’t even know they are wasting. It is amazing what you can do in ten minutes. I know because I have tested that theory repeatedly. You can text hundreds of people in ten minutes. You can make four very important phone calls in ten minutes, but most people do not think that they can. So, truly, how I have been able to leverage “advantage” in my life was having a high appreciation for the 60 seconds that equal one minute.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
It is interesting to answer the question “why did I choose a career in the creative field?”. I think that is a question that one could ask any entrepreneur. There must be an aspect of creativity for the most part to create a company of impact. There is a creative process even within the finances, which most people do not correlate with a creative part of their business. When you decide to be an entrepreneur and you start with a blank canvas, you may know what you want to paint, but you have no idea how it is going to look year after year. Establishing a business of longevity involves a continuum of creative decisions: branding, rebranding, reorganizing, and restructuring. It is important for your business to evolve and, therefore, the act/philosophy of evolution usually requires more than one creative brain. My businesses predominantly have been successful companies in the field of holistic health and top performance. That is why I have been referred to as a Professional Hippy. I think that your passion is the piece of creativity that fuels your business. I don’t think it has to be a paintbrush. You must be adaptable to be a successful entrepreneur. It is full of twists and turns that you cannot foresee coming. That is why the drive must be strong to fulfill some kind of objective or dharma. What I’d love to share with you about my business is the beautiful place to where it has now evolved. After 30 years of learning and experiencing everything that I have, we all know that there is nothing more beautiful than passing that information on to make it easier, richer, smoother for the upcoming entrepreneurial generation. Lucky me, my 15-year-old son sat me down on the couch and announced that he wanted to be an entrepreneur. He is a highly gifted artist and streetwear designer. For the last four years, I have been able to pour into my son everything that I have learned and support his new company’s build and growth. He may be like his mother and create multiple businesses in his lifetime, or he may have found his teenage sweetheart that he will stay married to for the rest of his life, and that is his company, Natsukashii. It is, of course, a creative company encompassing fashion, art, exposure, expression, and he has built it to create clothing that people will have a relationship with, evoking nostalgia. Is there anything more beautiful than being able to pass on your knowledge to kin? I don’t think so. That is where my business has taken me. It is said that children live what they learn, and he has clearly been raised in an environment of entrepreneurship his whole life. Now, at 19 years old, he has what it takes to go and do the same.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Ah, beautiful Vancouver is a very special place in the country of Canada! It is a must-visit place because it has very unique weather conditions. In Vancouver, we have the “Sea to Sky” highway. I live in the area we call “sea” where there is ocean, shops, fresh air, and nature to enjoy. Vancouver is a metropolis city amongst nature, trees, parks, and incredible beaches with logs to sit on. Then, you get in your car, and 2 hours later you arrive at one of the most beautiful, world-renowned ski resorts in the world called Whistler. The highway is a winding vision of nature that is incredible. It is almost difficult to keep your eyes on the road. When you arrive at Whistler, it is a bustling town in nature with residents of every nationality and visitors from around the world. There are amazing restaurants and bars for eating and dancing, and numerous activities from skiing to upside-down bungee jumping. It is the best of everyone’s world. You can go skiing in the morning, sip your favourite glass of wine in your hot tub in the afternoon, and enjoy 5-star class dining in the evening. Visitors to Vancouver must not miss, outside of Whistler, all the tiny shops and gastronomic experiences that you will find in the areas called Yaletown, Kitsilano and Main Street. My favourite thing to do when someone visits is take them to all the record stores that we have here. I watch their faces light up when they find their favourite album! There is so much to do in Vancouver, and in everything you do, you are greeted with a smile and a sense of community.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Absolutely 100% true is the statement that you do not get here by yourself. Being an entrepreneur of 31 years, I can’t begin to tell you the amount of people that I have heard stories from, read books about, took classes from, to get to where I am today. Sometimes it is a meme on social media that gives me the inspiration to stay pumped that day. When I look back at the beginning of my career, there was no social media and there were very few personalities to follow that I would be able to draw strength from. I am a true believer in having coaches, therapists, counsellors, advisors, and experts throughout the complete process of your company’s build. That is truly how I got to where I am today. If I were to say there was one book that changed everything for me, it would be Shakti Gawain’s Living in the Light that I read in my 20’s. It helped me understand the difference between feminine and masculine, creating ideas, and taking those ideas to market. It was a pivotal book for me in learning about the internal working of myself and how I think. Additionally in my 20’s, with not enough money to purchase but I did it anyway, I purchased a $300 multiple tape series by Tony Robbins at 2 o’clock one morning. I listened to those tapes over and over and drew great strength and relatability in terms of starting my first company. Since then, there are too many people that have made impressions upon me to mention in one article. As I said before, it is the continuum of support from business coaches and therapists. Music is also one of my biggest sources of strength and my go-to for keeping me going in my life and my company. Absolutely, 100%, it is music. If I had to give my top three, they would be Janis Joplin, Stevie Nicks, and Genesis.
