We had the good fortune of connecting with Deirdra Vierra and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Deirdra, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I honestly didn’t start off with that as a goal . I developed extreme chemical sensitivities from over exposure in a conventional salon environment and decided to build out my own space that was clean air , fragrance free and specialize in non ammoniated services .
Once I got it up and running I discovered I was the only salon with my particular business model and it took off from there. I’ve had to pivot a few times and I’ve upgraded my business plan many times in the last decade of being an entrepreneur stylist.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am tenacious and I am kind . My clientele and the hair artists that come into my world are my tribe and I love them all fiercely. What sets me apart from the majority is my dedication to my craft , the overall experience for my guests , my willingness to network and my desire to see others succeed.

My space is a vibe – I work with clean and vegan products, I use energetics in every service be it Reiki, crystals , or tarot .
I believe in working holistically from the inside out. I’m not a drive through chair . I take my time and work with my clients desires and lifestyle.

Was it an easy journey to where I am today ? No. I’ve been ostracized by my peers for my chemical sensitivities , I’ve had to go a lot of this alone because the training or the products were not easily accessible. Some of my color I learned by testing on hair swatches and by bringing in models . I’ve developed my own techniques and rituals that I use and teach today .

The one thing that I’m very proud of and excited to share about is the work I am doing for scalp treatments. I have developed an experience for those who would like to go a bit deeper during a session where I have added a guided meditation & energy work to a customized scalp massage . t’s a very relaxing and often enlightening experience . It’s unique to me
And I’m excited to develop it into a curriculum for other holistic artists by end of year .

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
We would have to get take out from Gardens of Taxco in West Hollywood , Breakfast at The original Barney’s Beanery as well. I’d take them to a night of Drag Queen Bingo at Hamburger Mary’s and dancing at The Abby .
Hiking up Bronson Canyon to the Hollywood sign – maybe a horse back ride leaving from Sunset Ranch through Griffith Park would be fun too . I love Mozza Pizza on Highland so that would be a must . A trip to Spellbound Sky in Santa Monica and then a quick bike ride on the boardwalk from
The Santa Monica pier to Venice .

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
There are quite a few actually . To keep it in the present I’d love to dedicate this shoutout to Nina Kovner of Passion Squared .
She has been an amazing business coach and friend for me . Not only has she helped me better define who I have become in the last two years she has also helped me cultivate a community of hairdressers internationally that I was able to heavily lean on during the last year with the pandemic.
