We had the good fortune of connecting with Delsin Depuy and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Delsin, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
My journey into entrepreneurship was more intuitive than strategic. From a young age, I was captivated by beauty and glamour. I began sharing my work on social media at 15 and enjoyed the positive feedback I received. In my sophomore year of high school, I did makeup for a group of friends for a school dance, charging them $20 each. This experience sparked my realization that I could turn my passion into a career. As I continued to grow my business throughout high school, I became increasingly committed. By my senior year, I chose to homeschool myself to dedicate all my time to building my business. It was clear that this was the path I wanted to pursue.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I attribute much of my success as a makeup artist to my strategic use of social media. By crafting an online persona, I attracted the attention of mentors and clients, significantly advancing my career. I often compare my experience to a ‘Hannah Montana’ lifestyle, balancing the roles of a content creator and a professional makeup artist. Managing both responsibilities can be challenging, but I strive to ensure that my online presence aligns with the professionalism expected in my field. Staying authentic to myself and my art remains a top priority
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Everything makeup artist that gets the chance to visit LA should pop into Nigel’s beauty Emporium. Truly a make up artist’s wonderland. I also love to go to “the Broad” in downtown Los Angeles to gather inspiration when I feel like I need it.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Please include all of the below.
My mom for her continued support of my nontraditional career. Kendrick Simpson, the first person I assisted in Memphis Tennessee. Jennifer Coleman for introducing me to the nonprofit organization “Blossom Within” who trusted me to host a make up class for women going through cancer treatment. Celebrity hairstylist Alyx Liu, who encouraged me to move to Los Angeles, and let me sleep on their couch while I figured out where I was going to live. Celebrity make up artist’s Micheal Anthony and Darian Darling, who i currently assist/apprentice for in Los Angeles.
