We had the good fortune of connecting with DeMaya Berry and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi DeMaya, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
Honestly when I started my business I didn’t know what I was doing, I just did it. I graduated with a degree in sports medicine and I opened a restaurant, two total opposite fields.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I started Mayas Crab Shack in my garage in 2018. I worked out of my garage cooking and preparing plates from June 2018-February 2019. Business was going well and out of no where someone reported me to my local health department and they shut me down and told me they would fine me if I continued. So I had to readjust and make some serious decisions if I wanted to continue cooking. The same day that I was reported my mother found a vacant restaurant 5 miles from my house. We contacted a few people and two days later I was signing a lease to the restaurant. I opened the doors to the restaurant about a month later with five hundred dollars to my name. Business was going great for me then boom the awful pandemic hit and traffic slowed down for me when I went curbside only. It was a challenge trying to survive the new norm with the Covid 19 pandemic but we survived. We had to change our daily day to day operations to different systems and it hasn’t been easy. In 2020 the mist of the pandemic I purchased a food truck to go to outside events and to serve at jobs because so many restaurants remained closed.
I recently opened a second restaurant because we have completely outgrown the first location.
My experience in the restaurant industry was slim to none when I first started but all you need is a little bit of faith and you can accomplish anything that you put your mind to.
I’m proud of my myself because I’m only 26 years old and have accomplished so much at such young age.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
We have a few beaches here so we might have a beach day and visit an amazing donut shop on the beach. We will catch a movie and have dinner and drinks at Ruth’s Chris.
