We had the good fortune of connecting with Demetrius Barry and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Demetrius, how do you think about risk?
I think risk taking is literally a mandatory component of shifting culture and moving ideas forward. I have been moderately successful in doing what is normal but I cant recall a time where I looked up to someone who was “like someone else” for doing things as they had been done before. Ive only felt that I was on the right path in my life when i exposed myself to uncertainty and against the odds.. Thats where a persons truth is stripped naked and you find out what your capacity for creativity is. Theres no discipline that i know of that doesn’t require testing your extremes to graduate and break plateaus. Taking risks has allowed me to position myself to be something that I haven’t seen yet… Have the courage to continue taking risks will define wether I make my mark or not.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I am a film maker and a rap artist. This year marks a total reboot of everything me. I spent years touring as a rapper and years studying the art of film making only to discover that I’d spent all my time scratching the surface of my talent and not digging into and amplifying my own unique perspective. I feel as if it was almost ordained that I got the big picture later in life to show the introverted/ un mentored artist that giving up on your greatness is not an option. It’s that attitude thats allowed me to prioritize my art over commerce or cool and just be comfortable.. being. I have overcome the challenge of self doubt through committing to radical self love and the professional barriers by optimizing every opportunity and not only being aggressively creative but aggressively professional, my time is coming …. I will manifest it.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Being new to the area, Im not as familiar as many might but the natural features here are absolutely ridiculous. Elysian Park, Topanga Canyon are my favorite places to chill, reflect and get grounded. Id be skating rooftop to rooftop with my homie to keep that urban vibe and enjoy the majesty of the Cali views. The la arts district is beautiful.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would like to thank all the people who have shared kind words and the energy of encouragement throughout my journey. My nephew Da John for his wreck-less belief and keeping me young. My sister DeDe for her mentorship… unconditional love and support. Kenneth Carter for being a bro bro through and through. ˚Karla… for almost 20 years of selfless dedication and support through it all…. and Jazmyn for seeing the greatness in me.
