We had the good fortune of connecting with Demi Howell and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Demi, how has your work-life balance changed over time?
Over time, what I’ve realized is there’s no such thing as BALANCE!! It becomes a BALANCING ACT. In the beginning of my career my main focus was ensuring that my business was successful. I was engulfed in doing whatever it took to maintain that level of success. Once I got married and had my daughters, I had to shift that focus to my family. However, I had to give them the same amount of energy and time if not more to sustain a happy home life. As an entrepreneur, you will always have to be in tune with what/who needs your attention the most. But, on the flip side, you still have to be in tune with other aspects of your life. If I give the majority of my time to my business my family life will suffer and if I give the majority of my attention to my family my business will suffer. I find myself PIVOTING alot!!

What should our readers know about your business?
As a consumer, I would purchase all the products even the collections from a cosmetics line. I would get home and have no idea on how to apply the products. Not only that, I found myself only using the shades that complimented me….the look that gave me the most confidence.

So, that was an eye-opener because WE, the consumer will spend $100’s of dollars on products that we won’t use. This experience is what prompted me and my husband to create a cosmetics line and “Customize Your Face”. We felt there was a need in the Cosmetics Industry to give the consumer the perfect look while only using minimal products. The benefits to purchasing a custom kit are they are cost-effective, the pallet is magnetic, and it is very convenient. Everything you need is in arms reach. We have worked together in tandem to perfect the line and are always evolving to make it better.

In addition to this, we created an app where our customers can shop with us live!!! Think QVC or HSN!!! This has been a gamechanger for the brand. It is the convenience factor that drives the app. With the world being so fast, this just another convenience factor that adds to the dynamics of our line. All you have to do is comment “SOLD” and the product is yours. All products are shipped within 24 hours! Our products are paraben-free, gluten-free, and vegan. We have liquid foundation, powder foundation, creme foundation, eyeshadow, lipgloss, lipstick, matte liquid lipstick, concealers, and much more. We cater to all skin types and tones. We are a family-owned and operated business and our consumers are our family too!!! Our mission is to enhance the beauty of women not recreate it.

This has not been a smooth road but one well worth all of the lessons learned along the way. The main struggle we faced was at the time there were no start-up cosmetics line by regular people. The line was created in 2009 and people of color starting a full cosmetics line back then wasn’t the norm. It takes alot of courage when you are competing with a lot of big name brands!!! However, here we are ten years later and our brand is better than ever!!

Demiere Cosmetics main focus is the consumer. We don’t believe in OVERSELLING our consumers. We believe in selling them the products that gives them the most compliments and confidence to fit their lifestyle!! We sell you your lifestyle in a custom kit. When women feel good about themselves, they operate better in life and work! Women don’t need 100’s of cosmetic products. They need what they need!! This minimalistic approach has saved our consumers time while doing their makeup applications. Our specialty is creating custom looks for our consumers. The thing that makes me the most proud is that the women who may not wear makeup due to the misconception can now feel comfortable because we sell them what makes the comfortable not what the world says they should wear. I’m known for doing ANY face in 30 minutes or less. What sets our company apart from others is that we give our consumers a voice in a world where they are sometimes not heard.

I believe women will shift more to an enhanced look. They will want to see their true selves in the mirror even if they are wearing makeup and want their authenticity to shine thru. The trending makeup looks will come from the era of the 90’s!!! Actually, that was my favorite beauty era!! The hair and makeup was bomb!!
