We had the good fortune of connecting with Denise Madrigal and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Denise, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
Risk taking is perhaps the biggest test in my career. It makes me question whether I want to be comfortable and stay comfortable or challenge myself and grow, learn, etc. If you don’t take risks you won’t know what’s on the other side of that. I honestly wouldn’t have made it as far as I have if I didn’t take risks and say yes to things.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I think my personality and happiness is what’s brought me far. Always stay grounded and have integrity is what my immigrant parents taught me. Being a first gen Mexican American there’s a certain pressure to live out your parent’’s “American dream”, but for me my passion wasn’t school at all. My first challenge came when I decided to ditch college and pursue something I loved which was hairstyling and makeup. To my parents that wasn’t a “real career.” I stayed true to myself and insisted on proving to my parents that I could make it and be successful! And I did exactly that. I’ve had the pleasure to work with celebrity clientele and my work ranges from red carpet, tv, editorial, commercials, weddings and everything in between. Always follow your gut, you’ll be so happy you did!
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
First of all, coffee. I can’t wake up without coffee so first stop is Commissary Coffee to grab a little iced cubano and their dreamy brisket burritos. I’m a sucker for thrifting and arts so definitely some shopping followed by a museum in downtown LA- perhaps LACMA. Then cross the street to some bomb food at Grand Central Market. Then we’ll finish the night strong and bar hop in Echo Park.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My family- always. Their love and support have molded me into who I am and that carries through into my daily life and career. Without them I don’t know who I’d be, truly. My everything!
