We had the good fortune of connecting with Denitra Gregory and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Denitra, why did you pursue a creative career?
Art and creativity has always had a special place in my heart and life experience. Interestingly enough, while in a not so creative career, I used art to help my clients. After my tenure in Social Work and Human Services, I discovered that the practices I’d used were transferrable and relevant in my current industry of beauty, fashion and art.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Unforgettable YOU is an Image Consulting firm that offers numerous Style and Appearance Maintenance services, including but not limited to, Personal Styling and Shopping, Photoshoot and Special Event Styling, Self Esteem Building Advocacy, Creative Directing and Concept Building. I believe in a person-centered delivery that allows individuality and uniqueness to be at the forefront, instead of trends. I’m most proud that all of the firm’s services elevate self-awareness and acceptance.
It definitely has been a challenge to maintain my convictions in a world that has celebrated certain beauty standards and sought to erase and/or appropriate Black beauty and culture. I think it is a daily goal of mine to showcase and represent for my culture and for all of those who feel underrated, underappreciated and misunderstood.
Along the way, I’ve learned that consistency of storytelling and unashamed sharing is the only way to increase awareness of the space that you OWN and OCCUPY.
I want the world to know that not only is Unforgettable YOU a style and beauty brand, but we are involved in community building, activism, and personal development.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I’m a coffee-lover and artsy gal, so we’re definitely going visit a few third wave coffee cafe’s! Red Hook in West Village, The Congregation and Dessert Oasis Coffee to name a few. Then we’d take in some art starting with murals around the city, like one Sydney James’ latest murals: The Girl with the ‘D’ earring. I’d also show off a few of my favorite local boutiques like Flo Boutique, By Popular Demand, and a few of my fave resale spots: Regeneration and Boro. To end, I’d visit EastEats to take in more culture and enjoy delicious food in an igloo experience in the city. Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
First and foremost, I have to give all glory to God for every talent and gift that I am allowed to demonstrate. Secondly, my mother is to thank and blame (lol) for my tenacious work ethic. My family has always been such an awesome support and encouragement in my journey. Additionally, my amazing husband has been my rock and ultimate cheerleader; he pushes me to be my best and goes out of his way to ensure that my vision for my business is manifested.
