We had the good fortune of connecting with DeQwan Young and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi DeQwan, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
When I first started my company, I had just been laid off from a great salaried position, and I knew I didn’t want to go back into the corporate world. I looked at all the things I could do and I wanted to use my degree, but I wanted to do it my own way. I knew it would be hard for me to break into any industry with little to no help, so I looked to the internet. I found YouTube, and I started a media company based around sports, and all things funny. I knew the freedom I could have would create a tremendous amount of completion in me, if I could just find a way to work for myself, using my degree, in a field that I love.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
After my senior year of college football (2008) and not being drafted, I spent years chasing a dream of making it to that level. I played Arena Football and it took me across the country, until I found filmmaking. I bought my first camera in 2013, and created viral videos that have garnered millions of views on YouTube and Twitter. This journey saw me reach three or four rock bottoms, I was homeless, and slept in my car when necessary. Early in my career, I drove my car all across the country filming weddings, making videos for physical therapy companies and more. Any type of work I could say “Yes” to, that would get my bills paid until the next month, I took it.
I want the world to know that you have to shoot for the moon, and listen to yourself. Nobody will see your grandest vision, but you, and you have to protect that, It is a very lonely life, and it’s difficult, and you’re going to want to quit, but that’s where the growth comes from. The growth comes from never giving up, when everything looks bleak. As long as you wake up and try everyday, you’re getting better, and that’s all you can do.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I haven’t had much time to explore, but I can spend all day on the beach.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I want to shout out Abigail Gazda, my best friend, and Ontological Life Coach. She helped me see who I truly was and what I bring to the table.
