We had the good fortune of connecting with Derinda Brown and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Derinda, how has your work-life balance changed over time?
As a consultant running my own business, achieving a healthy work-life balance has been a journey that has evolved over time. When I first started out, I was incredibly driven and passionate about building my consultancy, often sacrificing personal time and leisure activities to ensure its success. However, as time went on, I began to realise the importance of maintaining a balance between work and personal life for my overall well-being and long-term sustainability.
One significant change I’ve experienced is recognising the value of setting boundaries and prioritising self-care. In 2020, I faced an extreme family trauma followed by the loss of my mother and two dear friends, all within less than nine months. This period was a moment of recalibration for me. It made me realise the importance of cherishing moments with loved ones and prioritising my own well-being.
I’ve learned that taking breaks, spending time with loved ones, and engaging in hobbies not only rejuvenate me but also enhance my productivity and creativity when I return to work.
Moreover, I’ve embraced the concept of time management and delegation. By efficiently organising my schedule and delegating tasks to capable team members, I’ve been able to create more time for myself without compromising the quality of my work or the service I provide to my clients.
In terms of how I think about balance, I view it as a dynamic and ongoing process rather than a static state to achieve. It involves continuous adjustments and recalibrations based on evolving priorities, seasons of life, and external circumstances. In the wake of personal loss and trauma, I realised the importance of honouring my personal needs and values while still pursuing my professional goals.
I work with extreme passion for my clients, driven by a dedication to their success. This passion extends beyond my consultancy work; I now take risks as an investor in startups, aiming to support innovative ventures and contribute to their growth.
Ultimately, achieving balance is about finding harmony between the demands of work and the desire for a fulfilling personal life. And while it may require conscious effort and occasional recalibration, I believe that prioritising balance is essential for long-term success, happiness, and fulfilment in both my professional and personal endeavours.
What should our readers know about your business?
My journey into consultancy stemmed from a profound personal tragedy, which necessitated a shift away from high-pressure roles within Fortune 500 companies. At the time, prioritising work-life balance became paramount, leading me to embark on a consultancy path. Initially intended as a temporary solution, I soon found my niche within this space, leveraging my corporate reputation and network to foster organic growth, solely through word-of-mouth referrals.
What distinguishes my consultancy is its evolution from servicing solely “Big Business” to embracing a broader spectrum of ventures, from investments in startups to navigating the challenges of SMEs. Despite the diverse landscape, the core principles of business remain constant, emphasising the transferability of skills across industries and verticals.
However, growth posed its own set of challenges, particularly in maintaining the same level of dedication and quality while expanding the client base. Delegation and pace became critical focal points, requiring a delicate balance between client and personal commitments.
Amidst these challenges, invaluable lessons emerged. I learned the importance of selective client partnerships, understanding that not every opportunity aligns with our ethos and goals. Authenticity and integrity remained steadfast pillars, guiding every decision and interaction.
Central to my consultancy’s ethos is transparency and a collaborative approach to problem-solving. We eschew mere theoretical advice in favour of tangible execution, operating discreetly behind the scenes to elevate our clients’ brands. Our success is intertwined with theirs, positioning us as trusted allies rather than detached advisors.
Ultimately, my consultancy aspires to be more than just a service provider; we strive to be part of the solution, driving results and fostering meaningful collaborations. In a world inundated with noise, we offer a quiet yet impactful presence, where our clients’ success is the ultimate measure of our own.
