We had the good fortune of connecting with DERRICK BODY and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi DERRICK, how do you think about risk?
Hello, Risk to me is a direct reflection of our trust. We must all be willing to risk what we don’t know, don’t have & can’t see for a specific outcome. As an active duty service member I decided to risk everything I’ve ever known prior to serving my country to potentially provide a better life for myself. Time progressed and it turned out to be the best decision I could have made however, if I weren’t willing to risk my familiarity for the unknown challenges ahead I wouldn’t be where I am today. Joining the Navy allowed me to dream again and take more risk just because you never know the country may be up against and personally my risk taking allowed me to regain control over my life again. I am separating from the United States Navy in order to fulfill my dream, is that a risk? yes to absolutely abandon a routine I’ve adhered to and complied with for the last 8yrs is huge career risk. in my risk lies faith, ambition and an attitude that says I will make the life of dreams a reality.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I am Active Duty military ( U.S Navy). I joined Dec 2013-Present and it has been the most gratifying experience. My proudest moment about joining the military would have to be walking in the recruiting office and realizing this might be the most bizarre thing I’ve considered in my entire life. Taking that initial step shaped my decision making skills. This transition was not easy however, necessary, the challenge I faced prepared me to exercise my faith muscle as well as be more intentional about life altering decisions. On the other hand, I have also embraced my creative side which led me to roller skating. My motto is “Teach the World to Rollerskate” and I stand behind it 100 percent. I want people to know that stepping stones are just that and when an opportunity presents itself to follow your dream, don’t ignore it. Prepare now so you’re ready to go after what you want without hesitation.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Monday-Little Italy (brunch)/ Sea World Tuesday- Skate World (skating rink)
Wednesday- Pacific beach (Maverics Beach Bar) and surrounding restaurants
Thursday- La Jolla Cove ( Kayak, and Water Bike)
Friday- Gaslamp District ( Coin-op Arcade and Bar)
Saturday- Restaurants (Morning Glory)
Sunday- San Diego Zoo/Safari

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would start by thanking God for the many blessings and this opportunity. Imani Williams-Sparks I’d like to thank you for believing in me. Sin City Skate Shop (San Diego), thank you for planting an incredible seed in my life that has changed it completely. Additionally, I credit Mike “YEAHHHMAYNNE for being an awesome visionary for our San Diego skate community and the “Pernell Experience” brand. I want to thank the United States Navy for bringing me to SD and grooming me for leadership no matter the arena or platform.
